Spyderco that is carried across the world in a kayak!

#1

Post by 762cal »

So i've been hosting fellow sea kayakers at Manokwari, West Papua, Indonesia. Sandy Robson is currently paddling her Kayak from Germany and Australia and when I ask what knife are u carrying? She's showing me her :spyder: Tasman Salt!!! She's carrying it for 9 years straight! Wow!

Her companion, Justine carry a small 'butter knife' so I feel obliged to give her my :spyder: Atlantic Salt!

Thought it was very cool to share with u guys!

Very cool. I have a Tasman that I keep in a wet, salty compartment of my kayak. Mine too shows that bit of rust at the pivot. I tend to think it is from the washers there as the rest of the knife remains completely rust free. It is more of a cosmetic than a functional issue. Knife continues to work flawlessly.

I have both the Tasman and the Atlantic Salt. Nice to know what they could be doing if only I had the chutzpah of these women. Thanks for posting.

I would normally give pause to someone's thinking ability who intends to paddle across the globe in a kayak. But, the redemption here is the choice of a Spyderco.

Lol, I wouldn't want to arm-wrestle either one of them. They look pretty tough. :) As for the knives, it is awesome to see how well-loved that Tasman Salt is. Kudos!

Very cool. Of them. Of you. Cool to see H1 put to such good use and responding perfectly. (The pivot rust was sort of very interesting, too.)

Nice story, nice pictures.

Is there something in the pivot area that is rusting?

Hi Brian, I think it's the small exterior washers. I have never disassembled one to make sure, but I have seen the corrosion on the washers. The only time I have ever gotten that to happen is by leaving one in the wet, salty compartment of my kayak for more than 3 months unused. I say unused because even occasional use and a rinsing in the saltwater will present that from happening. The rust either comes from the pivot bolt or the washers but I'm almost certain it's the thin washers. It wipes right off the blade and doesn't affect function. I guess eventually the washers could completely rust out and need replacing. This is a problem that likely not 1 out of 100,000 people will ever encounter. Given, however, that it could probably be solved by changing the tiny washers to a completely non corrosive material, we might one day see some CQI in this area?

If it's that old, I'm sure it was one of the earliest ones. I know there has been CQI on them so far.

That is pretty rad! Good to see her worthy choice.
Thanks for sharing with the forum!

Looks like they may have cooler stories to tell than I do, wow, what an adventure.

Do you often host long distance kayakers?
