Any advantages of S35VN over S110V?
Any advantages of S35VN over S110V?
Knifeworks currently has the para military 2 available in both steels but S35VN is more expensive than S110V (slightly). I've always thought that S110V is the current highest end steel and I'm kind of confused that S35VN is more expensive. Any thoughts?

Re: Any advantages of S35VN over S110V?
They both have advantages over each other in different areas. What qualities are you after? I wouldn't say that either one is better or higher end.
S110V in my experience is more wear resistant and more stainless. S35V is far easier to sharpen and should be a little tougher. Both are good. Neither is my favorite.
The price difference may be due to the fact that one is a regular production knife and one is a distributor exclusive. I believe that Spyderco is strategically pricing the S110V models at a very competitive price point.

The s35vn version is a sprint run, and, therefore, a limited number are/ will be available. Exclusivity raises prices. The s110v model, however, is part of the standard production line. Sal and God willing, it'll be available forever since s110v is the more favored steel for the most part. Ironically, that tends to make it lower priced.
Re: Any advantages of S35VN over S110V?
I guess I just thought that S35VN was more 'run of the mill' and didn't understand why it's cost is significantly higher than S30V and a little higher than S110V. Either steel is probably fine for me TBH.

sabb8pro2: just saw your post. I guess that makes sense. Economics.
Re: Any advantages of S35VN over S110V?
Price gouging. Simple as that. Well, I suppose it may have something to do with sprint run cost or something like that, but I'd bet on price gouging.
As for advantages, that's completely subjective. I would say S110V is vastly superior to S35VN, but there are definite pros and cons to both, mostly that deal with the effort it's going to take to reprofile and sharpen each steel. For people who like an easier steel to sharpen, they may say S35VN is the better steel.

I find 35 easier to sharpen. Other than that, I'd give the edge to 110 in every other category except stain resistance, where they are the same in my experience.
That said, I own the s35vn para in question and have found it to be an excellent knife. I do not yet have my s110v blurple para.

Re: Any advantages of S35VN over S110V?
The s35vn knives are exclusives for a distributor called Moteng. If a dealer wants to sell those knives then they have to buy them from them and not Spyderco. The price therefore goes up as all the parties need to cover their costs and make a bit of profit. On the other hand, the s35vn knives were available on Massdrop a wee while ago for about $130 iirc.
If you have decent sharpening gear then go for the blurple s110v over the s35vn. The s35vn is easy to sharpen but the performance of s110v is much better in my opinion.

Just curious, what is your favorite? (I'm really partial to H1 personally) But this S110V is supposed to be pretty hard to beat from what I read. I'm talking about folding knife steels mind you.bearfacedkiller wrote:They both have advantages over each other in different areas. What qualities are you after? Re: Any advantages of S35VN over S110V?
For EDC purposes I don't really have a favorite. I have multiple knives in S110V and a ton of knives in S30V and just a couple in S35V so I don't dislike either one. The steels that I seem to enjoy the most have been Super Blue, VG10, Cruwear, XHP, Elamx, M4, CTS204P and HAP40. I like most steels but seem to gravitate towards these ones. I have carried and used S110V extensively and it is very good at what it does but I love the easy touch ups I get with these other steels. They all behave very well for me when they hit the stones.

The s35 costs more bc its a sprint, that's how the market works.tangent wrote:Knifeworks currently has the para military 2 available in both steels but S35VN is more expensive than S110V (slightly). It doesn't really have any benefit over s110v. There's the truism that it's somehow tougher than s30v, but all that was changed was a drop in vanadium by 1% and a tiny decrease in carbon, plus other very minor stuff added. It's just a consequence of s30v hype blowback.
110v is hypothetically more brittle because it has more stuff.
Either way, don't overpay for s35v.

Re: Any advantages of S35VN over S110V?
I have an S35VN PM2 and it has served me well. Still serving me well. And really I have no reason nor much desire to get the S110V as long as this one is functioning fine.
But that said, if it were a new purchase for my first PM2 and my choices were between spending money on the S30V, the S35VN, and the S110V.... well, I'd just wait and get the M4, lol. :D

Going back to Caly.

Just put a new hair whittling edge on my Native5 LW s35vn today and it was basically a sleepwalk. That is the only advantage I know of, and every day I put a shiny new dark blue Native in my shopping cart right before I close the browser...
