IN THE BEGINNING - VERY FIRST SPYDERCO!!!

#1

Post by SpyderMule »

Sal created the Spyderco C01 Worker...

As we know, Spyderco's design was the VERY FIRST to have a thumbhole in the blade, and a pocket clip on the handle.

And the VERY FIRST Spyderco C01 has only 2, not 3, screws (inset closer together) on the pocket clip and no lanyard hole, like mine:

As you can read from Sal's post back in '10, these were first seen at the Texas State Fair in Dallas, October 1981.

From what I've read and researched, the second variation still had no lanyard hole but had 3 screws on the pocket clip.

The 3rd variation, 3 screws on the pocket clip with finally a lanyard hole.

Footnote… the 'Evolution Set' replicated this first edition with the 2-screw clip - but the screws were set further apart, beyond the clip width.

Thanks,
Sid M.

Wow that's very nice! I like how thin it appears.

I wish Sal & gang were still going to the TX state fair to show their wares. I'd love the opportunity to meet them and tell them thanks!

Thank you both!

Actually - I spell my name 'Sid' - but tailored my username to adopt the Spyderco 'y'. ;-)

That is a beautiful knife. One should be so fortunate as to hold a piece of history like that in the palm of their hand. Looks like a true "pioneer" knife. Nothing like it at all w-a-y back in 1981! And Sal continues to produce fantastic knives such as my HAP Delica.

Thanks for sharing Sid :)

Very Cool! If 10/81 was my birthday - I'd have to legally change my middle name to 'Spyderco'. ;-)

Appreciate that.

Ironic also… that Burnt Orange HAP Delica you highlight is exactly what got me back in the official Spydie collecting game - now up to 13 - including this 1st Gen C01…

Also - love your username - well done.

Thanks again,
Sid

Sal and co have come a long way since the Texas State Fair days. Thanks for the thread, Sid, and welcome to the forum.

Sal,

I am honored - Thank you.

What is extraordinary to me is that your C01, even in this earliest incarnation, appears as new and revolutionary a design as that which could be released now, in 2016, 35 years later...

…the sign of a true visionary in the industry.

And TY Holland and Doc Dan as well.
