Burnt Orange Delica 4 HAP40 Blade Question...

Postby SpyderMule » Thu Jan 14, 2016 8:24 pm

Hello,

Brand-new Forum Member. Not a knife collector as I see reside here, by any means - although I've owned a number of Spydies over the years since the early 1990's.

Currently own a Toxic Green Ladybug3 w/ hawkbill blade - and this one - a Burnt Orange Delica 4… (my absolute favorite Spyderco to date).

Immediately grabbed it when I discovered the 'burnt orange' handle - as I'm a Golden Gate Bridge Freak - and the color's close...

So did a Buy-It-Now off eBay - and thought - why not - I'll even grab an early serial numbered one - even just to carry and use. But when I opened the blade, I noticed the somewhat irregular deviation in the blade paralleling the plain edge (more in appearance than feel)...

Again - pardon my ignorance in not using appropriate knife nomenclature - but is it simply unfinished and escaped Q/C at Spyderco when flat grinding? Cut a thin piece of saran wrap - and she's bloody razor sharp… HAP40 steel - which from what I read is pretty impressive.

I plan on using it - so I'm assuming it wouldn't really make a difference as to this issue - unless it's collectable this way(???)

I would appreciate your comments as to the issue though - as I've never seen one like this - on any brand...

TY!

You have a sprint run cladded blade. The cutting core is a carbon steel with higher egde retention but lower stain resistance. It's laminated with softer stainless steel. The line you're seeing is where the two steels meet. You'll see the hap40 core steel darken with use too. Great find! You won't be able to buy these for much longer, not without paying a premium

Every hap40 delica and other knives in the sprint run will have unique lamination lines. I love my hap40 delica...such a great knife. Welcome to the forum!

Ah - very cool… Thank y'all so much for explaining - now I love it even more!

Will be cool to see the steel darken over time.

And thanks for the fellow South FL welcome!

Best,
Sid

You just bought (in my humble opinion) the finest Delica that Spyderco has ever made. I am a bit of a steel junkie and hap40 might be the favorite in my collection. This particular sprint is also ground quite thin and is an amazing slicer.

The lamination lines not being totally symmetrical is absolutely normal. Enjoy your awesome knife!

Welcome, Sid!

That's a solid selection of knife choice you have; with the HAP40 Sprint Delica, and also the amazing little "Ladyhawk" in USN colors that manages to cut way above its' weight class!
Have that combo in your pocket and you can get a lot done! :spyder:
Going back to Caly.

Congrats on the sweet Delica, and welcome to the forum!

The lamination lines actually look pretty even on your Delica, but as others have said, they are unique on every knife and part of the character. Enjoy the Hap40. I've been very impressed with it so far.

LOL - yeah, pretty sure - as they're the only 2 folders I own.

But I do know cool Spydie models when I see them. Thanks again!

Not to bait you...but you know the HAP40 series will ALL be in the same burnt orange color...
