Fun at Heathrow en route to USA this morning.

I got nobbled at security with a locking knife (Spyderco) In my hand baggage! It was in my board shorts from previous kayak-fishing.

Everyone v understanding-police were called but no action taken! Oops.

Lucky you! I've also heard of a guy at our club with similar luck during a recent visit to the US. The only difference is that he travelled with a 9mm cartridge in his carry-on luggage. The "little fella" must have slipped in during his range activity - he used his range bag as a carry-on bag. The only difference is nobody noticed and he managed to go through multiple international scanner check points without being stopped. He only noticed it when he got back home.

My wife managed to make multiple flights over the span of a few years with a lock back Craftsman box cutter in a side pocket she never used. It wasn't until I I cleaned that carry on bag she had been using that I found it and made sure it never happened again. How security managed to miss a 6+ ounce all metal knife like that, but regularly wands my wife due to an oddly placed zipper on her pants, is beyond my comprehension.

I made it to Security with a Spydie once here in the states on a domestic flight and thought I was gonna have to throw my knife away. Thank goodness there was a post office in the airport. I just flat rate mailed it home. Just a tip in case anybody else finds themselves in that situation. ;)

Yeah, I had to mail home two knives from the airport. When I got married my wife gave me a traditional knife and it was in my carry on rather than my check in. I got nailed at security, but when I explained they grinned and pointed me to the UPS counter. Another time I went to the airport with an assisted knife in my pocket. I carry a knife everyday so I simply forgot it was there. I had no car with me to leave it in, so I had to leave it at the information counter and have a friend come by and get it.

Good on You!!!! Once airport security took a cigarette lighter from me and the wife....the one they took had no fluid in it (gas operated) and the guy at TSA said we couldn't take it on board the airplane because it wasn't working and could be a threat.....He keep trying to make it light over and over again....I said what are you doing? he said it could be a bomb (lol) I said if you think that then why do you keep flicking the button.....duh!!!!!!.....A week later I escorted my 6 year old to the airport to visit his grandparents in Florida....I walked all the way to the terminal not realizing I had a .357 Magnum strapped to my leg....Nobody said a word..Nothing showed up at the checkpoint..really? How'd they miss that one.....not like I didn't go through security checkpoint....and you wonder why crap happens!!!!!.....Doc:)
Reminds me of a story my friend told me....it went like this...he was taking his kid to see his first baseball game...NY Yankees at the stadium.... Security at checkpoint took his nail clippers saying it was a dangerous weapon.....he started to make a fuss but realized he could easily replace it for a dollar and let them have it as he didn't want to spoil his sons first experience going to a ball game.....they went into the stadium where they handed out 5.000 bats to each person....it was Bat Day at the ball game.........Really!!!!!!!....LMAO.......Doc:)

Doh. :)

Sounds like you might enjoy reading my old thread on the subject

Warhammer 40000 is- basically- Lord Of The Rings on a cocktail of every drug known to man and genuine lunar dust, stuck in a blender with Alien, Mechwarrior, Dune, Starship Troopers, Fahrenheit 451 and Star Wars, bathed in blood, turned up to eleventy billion, set on fire, and catapulted off into space screaming "WAAAGH!" and waving a chainsaw sword- without the happy ending.

The Department of Homeland Security sent their own agents to try to pass security in major airports with fake bombs and weapons. They sent out 70 agents. Out of those, 67 made it through without incident.

Congrats on keeping your pocket knife. Sounds like the odds were with you. :)

If you opt for a pat down instead of a naked scanner they don't put you through the metal detector (I tried once, they won't let you go through it). And hypothetically speaking a Dragonfly is easy to conceal. I'm just sayin'...

Unless you're a terrorist. If that is the case please use the naked scanner.

Wow, I'm sure glad this story had a happy ending, Doc. I was initially worried that you had to pitch your knife (knives). :( Whenever I fly, I go through a religious triple-check of all my pockets, bags, backpack, carry-on, coats, etc. to prevent such situations. This past summer (during a flight to Colorado), I actually had the TSA question a slight bump in my left front pocket. I told him, "it's a pack of gum." He replied (with his hand moving to his Taser), "Sir, I am going to have to ask you to remove all items from your pocket." Ok, no biggie, so I complied. I never thought I'd be at risk to get tased over a pack of Juicy Fruit. :p

My wife recently got through 2 flights both ways to Las Vegas with a regular sized pepper spray on her carry-on. She didn't realize she even had it in her bag until we got home.

**** no! My knife was confiscated as a matter of course. I was more concerned about the arrestable offence of carrying a locking blade "without good reason", let alone taking it on an international flight.

I'd been shooting a revolver (Ruger SuperRedhawk) the day before, plus I did some reloading so was already a little paranoid about the "auto-sniffer" picking me out for special attention without the scary X-ray appearance of a serrated Spydie in my hand-luggage.

Back when all this started I was going through when I realized my knife was in my carry on; I told the TSA Agents about it and they actually gave me a choice to have them dispose of it or I could walk back into the main airport and mail it to myself. I chose to mail it, a week later I got it in the mail but I couldn't tell who it was from; duh, you every try recognizing your own hand writing?!?! It's just weird...
