New guy, my first Spydercos(3) pics and a question about the edge on 1

#1

Post by Shockwave »

Hello everyone. My name is Chris, I live in Michigan. First off what a great forum, what an amazing company. I was drawn to Spyderco for so many reasons. The history, the family atmosphere, and of course the knives themselves. I myself have been in the tree and landscape business my whole life. For all those years I carried the famous super tool from Oregon. It as always served me well, but it's heavy and bulky. I decided to step up my game and get a real blade that I can always have on my person.

I took the plunge and bought 3 Spydercos from KW. A Para 2 in S30V, a Manix 2 LW in S110V, and a Gayle Bradley Folder. Everyone is correct in the praise of these knives. I see why they are so popular. I am super impressed and blown away by all 3 of them. They were all worth the money no doubt. All 3 functioned perfect out of the box. Razor sharp, perfectly centered. I see more Para 2's and Manix 2's in my future... I'm buying a combo edge Endura this payday, yea I've been bitten. :spyder:

******Here's my question******

Of course the knife(Manix 2) will be a user for me, but near the tip, the edge has a slight imperfection. It looks like the edge of the blade is not uniform/consistent to the tip. Like a dip. I plan on buying a sharpmaker this winter, but I have no experience at all. I posted a few pics below, but they are phone pics. Is this something that will come out after sharpening? I don't think it will alter the performance of the knife, so am I being to nit picky? Or should I send it back for a replacement? I never had a high end knife(high end to me) and I just wanted to make sure that I'm good to go, and this blade is fine. Sorry for the noob question. It's more prevalent on the left side of the blade, or the side with the lil spydie logo. Thanks in advance.

I have a simple philosophy. Any imperfection that requires magnification to be noticeable is insignificant. Even more so when it's something that will disappear with a sharpening or three. Keep in mind that Spyderco knives are sharpened, by hand, on a belt grinder, and that, while the Manix 2 Lightweight may be a high end knife to you, it's one of Spyderco's lower priced offerings.

Nothing Wrong with your Edge

#7

Post by LC Kid »

Hi Shockwave!

And welcome to Spyderco Forums :spyder:

As far as I can see from your pics there's nothing to worry about on your new Manix edge. I'm sure it cuts wonderful, and that's all about a knife edge.

As said, once you sharpen your blades anything that is now apparent in your edges will disappear for sure. So, why bother?

OTOH, if that really push your buttons well, you can send it back and that's it. KW is and have always been a very well known and respected knife Dealer, meaning that they'll take care of you.

Thanks for the kind greetings everyone! I didn't think it was a problem but after browsing this forum I knew I wasn't going to get attacked for asking a noob question. Thanks for taking the time to answer.

I really only set out to get the 2 knives manix 2 and para 2. But after reading about the GB and than finding out about the man himself, I had to get one before they are gone. I loved the handshake deal that he has with Spyderco. I still make handshake deals regularly in the tree and landscape business. Granted they aren't for the same amount of money, lol. But it's inspiring to know there are still honest people out there.

Thanks for the offer HarleyXJGuy, but I think I'll hold on to this one :)

Yup, that'll go away in no time with some good use and subsequent sharpening. If anything, it should be motivation to use it more! Welcome to the club, you made some great picks in those three there!

Welcome Chris, you picked a few solid work knives! Nice variety of steels and locks and handle materials. That slight dip at the tip will sharpen out soon. Enjoy them!

Welcome to the adiction. The real problem you got is that Spydercos tend to invite relatives in your home-and they never leave.

Hi Chris, welcome aboard! :)
Your knives look good to me. As the others mentioned, a few minor deviations are to be expected. You've got good taste in knives/models by the way.

About how far are you from Coldwater, Michigan by chance?
