Post by AKBEAR »

So on a whim I decided to attempt to mirror polish some s110v. I think it's turning out well ;)

Yes a tutorial would be most excellent.

Looks very nice btw.
On my radar: 110V Military, Police 4 and some sweet Rex 45 Military action.

Newest Spydies: S90v Ti Military, Pacific Salt and a special Kiwi.

Just hand polish the blade against some sub micron diamond lapping film....takes a heck of a long time to remove the original belt grind lines. Rather....I hand rubbed the blade against lapping film that was adhered to some plate glass.

I hope Spyderco doesn't mind the link

Lee Valley has a nice line up of polishing and other abrasive materials. You all might want to also check out JapanWoodWorker and Garrett Wade for diamond stuff. Do any of the "non-abrasive" polishes like FLITZ, Knorrostol or Brasso have what it takes to really mirror shine any of these supersteels? I've sure had great luck using FLITZ for a lot of cleanup and rust removal type jobs.

Also who other than Lee Valley do you all use for supplies?

Precision Surfaces International has been good to use for polishing tapes.
There are several varieties of 3M PSA, here is one.

Flitz will remove stains & oxidation, but it's more of a maintenance thing than a polishing compound. To do a true polish, a series of fine & finer grits is used until the "mirror" finish is achieved. The mirror is just a series of scratches too fine for the eye to resolve.
