Roughing up G10

#1

Post by Jeffmcmullen9807 »

Hello all,
I've had and carried my Yo2 since they hit the market. As a result it's become pretty smooth. Has anyone given this a shot? I was thinking about a checkering file or something. What say you?

Technically it should work. I think of G10 kinda like wood working but with hazardous dust. People have done all kinds of patterns in g10 with files and with milling machines. I don't see why this wouldn't work as well.

I agree. You can find checkered G-10 handgun grips, among other things, for sale all the time, so it's certainly possible. Also agree that fiberglass dust can be a heath hazard, so you either need to wear a good respirator or to work wet, preferably under running water.

I sent some smooth scales to get sand blasted once. That worked really well giving it a good grip.

Sand blast is the best, especially if you/they use cement dust...
Garnet will wreck the scales as it is too big...

Thanks so far, all

Good stuff to think about. I'll likely go for a hand modified option as I like to tinker and am at times faced with an overwhelming amount of free time combined with seclusion. Maybe I need to start with a blank of G10 to mess with. That would add to the fun.

Get a respirator. G10 dust is no joke.

Come to think of it is there any reason I need G10 to practice? Seems a pricey option. A block of wood and some files should do me good.

Absolutely IMO. Practice with as little cost as possible. I made a "sort of" knife handle out of some scrap 1x4 I got at Lowe's a few years ago. Actually, for a work knife a pressure treated 1x4 would be just fine I bet. Some of it even looks good after using a stain.

Yeah, I'd say that XM is grippy. I wonder how i'd go about that?

Here's a quote from Hinderer's site on how the scales are created.

"
Our XM-18 scales provide a secure grip no matter the environment, yet will not abrade your hands. They are fully CNC machined from nearly indestructible G10 laminate which is impact resistant; it is not affected by temperature or moisture, and is maintenance free. The XM-Texture helps to provide maximum knife control with a no slip grip perfect for all-weather operations and extreme conditions.

Hi Folks!

Absolutely true.

And since G10 actually is a really hard stuff to work with, it's even more important to protect from it.

Definitely be careful about the dust, when not too big I also like to work wet and never get the dust airborne.
I do some carving in bone and wood and occasionally in micarta/G10, if you want something cheaper to practice on you might wanna try some rather hard wood or just get some beef bone - both quite different still from G10 but at least a bit harder than most regular wood.

I dabble in DIY but street clear of noxious gasses and dust. Hate to say, but unless you want to invest in cumbersome equipment I would be tempted to find someone who mods scales professionally. Greater chance of success too.

Most of the time Mr. Clean Magic Eraser and some rubbing will bring G-10 back to being grippy. Usually oil and dirt get in the fine notches and make it feel smooth.
