Great review! I'm hoping to pick one up when I have the extra funds.

Hi Will,

Welcome to our forum. Nice find. We haven't made that model for years. Tooled up in the US and made them in Golden. Then we tooled up in Taiwan and made some there. Then we tooled up in China and made them there. Never quite caught on and was expensive compared to Leatherman's and Gerbers.

It was designed by the engineer that designed the navigation system for the Mars Rover. Really hard to manufacture though. Never could get the quality to where I was happy with it. I still travel with one.

I wouldn't mind having one of these in my EDC bag. Maybe it would be feasible to do a run of these through a pre-order and funding system like Kickstarter? I'd put in money for two.

Ahh, this is a club that I would very much like to belong to, but alas, this one was before my time. :(

Hi Carrot,

Probably not. Mfr was very challenging. We lost our shirts on the project. They are worth far more than they cost to buy.

i wonder if a new version with significant 'design for manufacturing' improvements would be more competitive. Got me thinkin'...

I would too. I would even be willing to pay inflated secondary market prices but I rarely (if ever) see one for sell.

Well I should even have a Spyderench club membership and I deeply desire Spyderco to come up with a Spyderench 2 model. The Spyderench was a different animal compared to most multi-tools but when I go on hunting trips or any other excursion I always have by base group of essential Spyderco knives as well as plenty of sharpening gear. But my Spyderench is always accompanying my Victorinox Swiss Tool X >> those two really go hand in hand.

I asked the guy who bought mine if he'd be willing to sell it back - he is, for $250.. I will have to think about that for a couple of days..
It is LNIB and first gen Made in USA and all, but that's a hefty wad of cash..

Still, not bad compared to what I've seen online for them.

The average price has been in the US$400 range. I bid on a beat up pair that wound up going for $275.

A question for other owners/Sal - Did they come with a belt pouch or was that an option? Mine's boxed with papers but no pouch. i asked my uncle when i bought it from him, but he had no memory of any pouch.
He wasn't known to keep boxes and stuff, only the knives though.

Believe it or not I got an aftermarket pouch from Victorinox that fits mine perfectly. Now it didn't have Victorinox's name on it but it's mainly designed for one of their smaller multi-tools and it truly fits the Spyderench perfectly. Also it's got a belt loop on it as well. I've had mine since about 2006 so I'm not 100% sure that they would still sell it. But I got it from a SWISS ARMY store at the Dallas/Ft. Worth international airport and they had a really nice selection of Victorinox products and other Swiss made gear at that store.

Hi Larry,

We did make a pouch for a while. Black Cordura with a snap on the flap and a red bug embroidered on the front.
