Well, today at a gun show I bought an aluminum training karambit from Joe Estrada. He had no live blade karambits to sell. I picked up a live Strider Karambit from Oklahoma Police Supply, who had a table at the show also. The Strider is rather large; I would still like to see a karambitized SPOT!

It seems that lately we are getting many requests for a folding Kerambit with Spyderco quality, even from overseas.

We're pretty busy at Spyderco R&D right now, so if we were to venture into that area, we would have to work with (or at least begin with) an outside design.

We'll chase down Bram's design for another look. I understand that Warren Thomas ( a Texas custom knifemaker) has been making custom folding Kerambits for over a year.

Any input would be appreciated.

Sal, I like Michaels Janich's idea of replacing the spacer in a Harpy with an extension with a ring. The ring would need to be angled "just right" or it would not be comfortable to hold the knife with a finger through the ring. I heard Reese Weiland changed the angle of the ring on his custom karambit folders to be more comfortable. I have handled one of the early ones, before the change. Anyway, I would stand in line for a karambitized Harpy or 3 or 4! It seems to me such a venture would not require as much R&D as starting from scratch. Thanks for listening to the ELUs!

Hey Sal,

I'd like to see a Spydie Karambit (folding or not) in production. I'd like to see what Bram's idea is (at least as a reference).

Interesting! I have been looking in to the Karambit of late. Even ordered a book by Steve Tarani about them at Amazon.

Good to hear Spyderco is taking an interest. I was thinking perhaps it would be an idea to integrate a ring with Bram Franks' TUSOK. He has revered to it as being a karambit without a ring so it is already close. And I think a many of us here at the forum have been looking forward to seeing the TUSOK in the 'flesh'. It would be like killing to flies with one swath!

I have been playing with the aluminum karambit trainer, and reviewing Steve Tarani's book, and it has helped me appreciate my Harpies and Civies even more. Not to mention the Strider Karambit, of course.

It seems to me that if you studied james keating's civilian video you could use a kerambit the same way. I plan to get a emerson folding kerambit as soon as they are available this spring.

Hi all!
I'm a newbe in this forum and I'm highly interested in a Spyderco Kerambit, how may we let to know the spyderco we are interested in one?

Someone said that Spyderco perhaps will work on an existant product to transform it in a kerambit, what about this?

It seem to be a custom knife made by Warren Thomas, perhaps Spyderco may think about a mass product.

let me know what do you think

I must be crazy for karambits; I ordered a second Strider Karambit! This one arrived with a much better sheath than the first.

seems to me a Spyderhawk does everyting you would want from a Karambit, but without the benefit of the ring. Which would be easier to explain to the local cops? Which is more effective?

Dear Enumclaw:

The basic cutting function of the concave edge of the Spyderhawk is very much like the corresponding edge of a karambit. Many karambits have sharpened back edges and may more radically curved to allow cutting and hammer-style chopping with the convex edge.

The ring allows the user to manipulate the knife, extending it and retracting it to create a very distinctive cutting style. It also makes disarming the knife much more difficult. Unfortunately, all the things that make a karambit such a neat weapon can also make it less defensible to the authorities. As a martial arts tool, however, they are amazing.

I just returned from a subject-matter expert conference in Washington, D.C. and got to work with THE karambit authority in the U.S., Steve Tarani. I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with him and, like all the others in attendance, was jazzed when he treated us to an impromptu karambit demonstration. If you really want to learn how to use one of these specialized knives, check out Steve's book (from Unique Publications), his videos (available from various sources, soon to include Paladin Press), or, best of all, through firsthand instruction. Steve is a great instructor and a true professional in every sense of the word.

Stay safe,

Recently, I read a story in which an enemy soldier attempted to grab the weapon of one of our special ops guys in a certain foreign land.

Our trooper used his karambit to dispatch (read kill) the bad guy. Apparently, the karambit works well (at least for some people).

I've read a lot about Karambit and even have Mr Emersons videos. He basically uses it like it was a knife. The videos emphasize both forward and reverse grip. Ernie takes a more aggresive approach to knife defense as the Fighting Folders emphasize the pass, meet, and follow cuts. I made a compromise and bought a serrated Dodo. Most karambits stick out of the pocket too much for me. This is a great forum I might add. Mike I really look forward to your new videos. Can a Dodo be used with the applications on the videos?
