For a woman I would personally gift her a Delica, one of the stainless models.

I'd say a Squeak or a Dragonfly (Both come in pink :p)!
A tiger has claws.
A wolf has teeth.
An eagle has talons.
We, have Spyderco.

Seeing how she has interest in it I am thinking something like a Delica or if you want to spend a little more a Domino for the fancy factor.

I agree with the guys who recommended the Dragonfly but not every female wants a small and pink knife. Course of she does then DF it is.
On my radar: 110V Military, Police 4 and some sweet Rex 45 Military action.

Newest Spydies: S90v Ti Military, Pacific Salt and a special Kiwi.

It appears the Dragonfly is the overwhelming choice here.

The Air is a very classy discreet knife. But clip less, unfortunately.

Well, it looks like the Dragonfly has pulled way ahead as it should. It gets my vote as well in any iteration.

Just wondering if they have knife laws on her campus? If that's the case you might want to think about something like an Urban slip it or a UKPK.

Another vote for Dragonfly as long as it's OK for her to carry at school. I absolutely love mine. It carries like a feather and doesn't freak people out yet it grips and cuts like a much larger knife. This is what I chose when my wife suggested that we get my BIL a knife for his birthday. It comes in his favorite color to boot!

Dragonfly. Maybe a Delica, but the Dragonfly is wickedly effective at about anything and won't raise eyebrows. Better yet, she can clip it to her clothing about anywhere and it will be light and unobtrusive.

I recommended the DF because women's clothes have what we may laughingly call pockets...too small for anything. But a DF will fit easily. Also, it can be clipped inside her waistband. Many women carry small purses so the DF does fit in them. It it is a clutch you can take the clip off and it should fit inside.
Now, my wife lloovveess her DF. In fact, the she liked the orange one so much she asked Sal for a purple one and he said "I'll see what I can do." What a great guy. So, now she has a purple one, too. Sal said his wife carries a purple DF.
I have tried to transition my wife to a Delica, but I cannot get her away from the DF, though if she needed to defend herself the Delica would be a better choice.

I got my daughter a Tatoo dragonfly, she loves it though it doesn't appear to get much use. Had the purple been around at the time it would have been the choice.

Had not thought of that - also there is the DK.

If they do, and they probably do, they are almost certainly outright forbidden, so not sure a slipit makes any difference.

They can't carry anything with a blade of 3" or longer.

The d'fly is probably a little on the big side for a lot of girls... Think small and pretty... if it fits in her tiny girl pockets and is pretty she'll be more likely to have it on her person when/if she needs it.

and I'm not runnin girls down here, they really do get the shaft when it comes to pocket space...

Just out of curiosity, since you mentioned the Chicago, then how about the Cat? Slightly larger than the Chicago (blade is just under 2.5 inches), with a larger handle as well, but otherwise very much the same knife.

The Squeak is also a good selection (even though it's not a locking blade, it's got some excellent features that make it very safe for a slip joint). It may be short (same length blade as the Chicago -- practically the same shape), but it's got GREAT steel, and it's crazy light.
