Re: New Name for the Endeavor?
Thanks for the extra links Johnnie. The more connections the better, even if most folk won't care and will take the name at bare face value.
I am getting a bit snow-blind looking at all these different possible names. Few are hitting me with the sort of Eureka feeling I had on the first name I liked, and on Endeavour. Probably more to do with me getting jaded than that those earlier ideas being any better.
While looking away from aerospace, I did think about animals and geographic locations. Big cat names tend to be difficult, either they sound a bit preposterous, or someone has used them already. Randall King Knives has a Lynx, and Spyderco once did an Ocelot. You have to get a bit creative, so if Spyderco ever want to do another cat named knife, I would nominate "Margay", another smaller, nimble arboreal jungle cat. Didn't sound like the right sort of thing for a fixed blade though.

Re: New Name for the Endeavor?
Pathfinder has a nice double meaning for a knife with Bushcraft roots.

Pathfinder would be a no-go...

Polaris ?
Re: New Name for the Endeavor?
I vote against Perigee. That name has an iconic place in my field. I just couldn't call a knife by it.Stuart Ackerman wrote:As apogee is taken..what about perigee...?

"Polaris" reminds me of nuclear missiles, maybe "Atom" would work better?Stuart Ackerman wrote:Polaris ?

Resolution (or Resolute)...or "Resolve", which also happens to be the name of a lunar rover?

Not too bothered about retaining reference to space, but it is nice to have.
I vote for Tranquility 1st, Resolve 2nd.Stuart Ackerman wrote:Tranquility...

Spyderco Nova
Re: New Name for the Endeavor?
I thought about this while I was wandering around at work today.
The previous knife was the Bushcraft and it had a Scandi grind.
This one is ground differently and uses a different steel so why not the "Bushcraft 2"?
Boring, but practical, and since the Bushcraft name was okay then this should be as well.

Re: New Name for the Endeavor?
List so far:-
I don't think that this knife will be so good for what I think of as bushcraft and that it would be wrong to give it a name that implies that it might be. Camping, trekking, expeditions and hunting, definitely but bushcraft, not so much. It will still work, but bushcraft is not its raison d'être.
(For me, bushcraft is inextricably linked to the skills required to make things in the field from natural materials, from wood. Cutting wood well needs a thin, fine, polished edge. All of my friends and I have experience with S30V which is a pig to get a polished edge on, and that edge disappears almost instantly and effortlessly, I can't begin to describe how low my opinion of that steel is now for a bushcraft knife. On the other hand, a coarser "working" edge stays for a very long time through really rough cutting chores, making it excellent for utility. I expect that S90V will accentuate these characteristics.)

Since the first one had a no frills, no nonsense name, how about carrying that over and calling it the Spyderco Utility?C_Claycomb wrote:

:D
Good point. No one could argue that "Bushcraft" hasn't been used by other manufacturers.

Re: New Name for the Endeavor?
I also mentioned the name Sojourner before (one of the Mars rovers). Didn't see that in the list above.
Looks like that name's been used before anyway.
