Stretch or Endura - which one to choose?

#1

Post by archangel »

Aloha!

I think my next Spydie should have a ZDP-189 steel blade. :)

Dimension- and cost-wise I am considering either the Stretch or the Endura. Both have a similar blade length and thickness, right? Is the shape of the blade the only / main difference?

Which one would you choose?

Of the two I'd go with the Stretch...love that solid ZDP. I also think the ergos are vastly superior.

I own both, but think the Stretch is a better everyday carry knife. It really packs max blade length into a slightly smaller handle.

E4, I like the blade shape WAY better than the Stretch.

The E4 carries better in the pocket. The Stretch carries better in the hand. At least for my respective pockets and hands. :p

If you're wanting a ZDP-189 blade I would definitely go with the STRETCH. Now don't get me wrong because the ENDURA is a great user model and I've owned and used about a half a dozen of them over the years. The Endura is a workhorse especially in Spyderedge.

But from what I've been told by fellow knife enthusiasts that the STRETCH model is more ridgid and has more of an ideal blade length. I've also heard that the STRETCH model with the ZDP-189 blade is a great user model with superb control.

However if I could snag a ZDP-189 Endura at a bargain/giveaway price I wouldn't turn my nose up at it by any means. But the STRETCH would be my first pick of the two models.

If you wait a bit eventually the Stretch with brown G10 will become available, along with its improved blade shape and finger choil. The price will probably be higher than the current FRN model, but I bet it will be a very nice knife.

Get both, of course. But get a Stretch first.

Stretch for me. I like the ergos, and the choil. I find it's a more refined design than the Endura.

I prefer the Stretch myself, but both it and the Endura come from the same maker and use the same nested liner construction, so build quality will be identical. Blade thickness is the same, and weight is virtually identical. It really comes down to which features are most important to you. The Endura offers 1/4" more blade length, a selling point for some, while the Stretch offers a usable 50/50 choil which others, myself included, prefer. The Stretch handle feels great to me but folks with large hands may find it cramped and prefer the Endura's less structured handle. Some folks don't care for the shape of the Stretch's blade, others find that a narrow blade can come in handy sometimes.

Stretch is my personal EDC blade and I've given a couple as gifts, but I opt for an Endura when backpacking. The little bit of extra length on the Endura make a big difference with food prep. Given the "one knife" choice between the two though, I'd choose the Stretch everyday.

Not that the Stretch can't pull a little food prep duty itself! Just called on it for service at a friends house with some horrible kitchen knives last week.

I have an Endura and have large thick hands. The Delica fits my hand well, but the Endura is not quite as nice in my hand. If you have larger hands I would hold each of them and see which feels better.

Thanks guys. What do you mean by 50/50 choil? Don't know this term, can't find it in the dictionary either, and there's neither any listing in Spydiewiki, nor in wikipedia... :o

This is the half handle/half blade area below the pivot where your finger goes, hence "50/50 choil".
