I think I would prefer the leaf shape myself in either s110v or 52100

for that platform I'd like 52100 with ffg to (almost) zero like opinels. both blade shapes would work for me.

Zero ground 52100 could be cool but m4 would be cooler.

Well S110V is the only stainless option, so in this case a vote for a carbon steel might just be a vote against S110V. As always, it's important to think: "what am I asking" when designing any test/poll/questionnaire. The lack of other stainless options may be confounding what you can say about the results. How would things change, for instance, if you added AEB-L to the list?

Yeah, More stainless options would have been a good idea. CTS-204P or CTS-20CP would be cool to see on a UKPK.

Is 52100 a Japanese steel?
Most recently acquired: Military 2, Paramilitary 2 Tanto x2, YoJUMBO, Swayback, Siren, DLC Yojimbo 2, Native Chief, Shaman S90V, Para 3 LW, Ikuchi, UKPK, Smock, SUBVERT, Amalgam, Para 3 CTS-XHP, Kapara, Paramilitary 2 M390

Why not :p ?

I guess there have been plenty of stainless options already made in Spyderco slip joints. Do you have one already; they are really rather good? It might be that there is a huge untapped market for a carbon steel slip joints? There are currently 35 votes for carbon steel that backs that up and the fact that s35vn got so few votes could possibly also suggest that stainless has been done well enough by Spyderco already.

The steel options are the steels that Sal mentioned were possible in this thread -

http://www.spyderco.com/forumII/viewtop ... =2&t=66783

I also added m4 as that was also pretty popular with forumites in that thread. I only wanted to list the steels that Sal himself stated he would like to use in a ukpk sprint. Sal's idea was to use a high end steel in the current frn handle (possibly in midnight blue), adding other handle options would just make the project too expensive.

If we want a ukpk sprint then we have to be realistic about what we choose, so it's best to choose between steels mentioned by Sal himself. I think he knows better than anyone what will work in this format.

No, I believe it's a North American steel normally used to make ball bearings. Knife blades made out of 52100 with the correct heat treat are said to have very good edge retention and be fairly easy to sharpen and maintain.

Hopefully Jim or Cliff can chip in with more info on the steels in question :)

That's fine, I was just listing a possible explanation for the choice and throwing out a hypothetical. There was a good reason for the included choices, as you mentioned: Sal's listed steels, and the one most mentioned by other members.

52100 is indeed a ball bearing steel made here in the US. It has been used in knives for a long time. It is not all that much different than 1095 except that the very small difference in composition is supposed to improve the heat treat. Someone with more info will chime in soon. I have a 52100 mule which was reported to be around 63 hrc that sees some kitchen duty and I like it.

OK, so dark blue and 52100. Sounds great!

I got my debit card out, where do I place my order?
