Don't have your knives sharpened at the gun show

#1

Post by Evil D »

So, in the body piercing world (of which I used to work), there is a saying that goes something like "you wouldn't take your car to a tattoo artist to get it fixed, so why would you go to a tattoo artist for a piercing?".

Well, in the knife world, I think the same probably holds true to taking a knife to a gun show to get it sharpened. I sold this knife to a friend about a year or so ago with one condition: Bring it back to me when it needs sharpened. He didn't listen. Here's what he ended up with:

That's the same knife that had this gorgeous edge on it:

Ouch! Looks like it was sharpened on the sidewalk outside. Curious... Is it even sharp?

Those "professionals" are idiots. You should have seen a serrated knife we had a "pro" sharpen in the kitchen years ago. Horribly horrible, and it snagged and wouldn't cut.
- best wishes, Jazz.

At first when I read the title I thought to myself, why would Evil D get someone to sharpen one of his knives???? It makes sense now though. That's brutal. Nobody sharpens my knives but me :)

No he said it's more dull now than when he gave it to the guy.

Is this candid camera? It's hard to believe that was an accident...or rather, that was someone's best attempt.

That's an awful job, did they use an angle grinder?

When I read the title and saw your name as the op my first thought was "you're the last person I thought would get a knife sharpened by someone else" haha. Ya they definitely butchered that knife, be interesting to see it after you fix it

looks like a machine did that with a very shaky operator that did not know exactly what he was going for. Sharpening is always better by hand to check progress and test sharpness, that quick sharpening can ruin a blade fast.

I see nothing wrong here. Basically, the guy took a PE blade in to get sharpened and ended up with a SE blade. :p

I have to say I admire your buddy's courage in asking you to fix the knife but you should charge him for it so he fully learns his lesson :p

Ouch! At least a solid flick to the nut sack was warranted for this. :)

More like he started out with serrations and ground them off lol. He lost a lot of steel. It's gotta be pretty thick behind the edge. Probably due for a regrind.
