How often do you folks buy a Spydie?

#1

Post by CKE »

Haven't posted in awhile, I was having computer trouble. I could get on the the Spyderco home page but then couldn't get into the forums.

Anyways how often do you try and buy a Spydie or any knife for that matter. For awhile I would just buy what ever I wanted whenever I wanted it. Now I have had to slow my purchases down...almost to a non existent level, I am getting married. So my question how often do you buy???

I have bought several in the past few months. I alot myself $40/week for gas and what extra I have left I save up towards my next . I have been able to save about $20 to $30 /week since I have been driving my wife's Dodge Shadow instead of my Ranger. The Shadow gets about twice the gas mileage that my Ranger does. I have acquired 6 new along with a couple of non since September.

I buy a knife whenever a knife just screams out "Buy me, you can't live without me!" I don't have too many knives, I'm not really a collector, just a user. My tastes have changed over the last couple of years, I used to favor larger blades, lately I have been looking at shorter blades. In fact I bought my first Spydie in a while, it is a Navigator in VG-10 steel. I saw it for $30 at SMKW(Eknifeworks.com?), and I figure I couldn't go wrong. Regardless of the price the Navigator intrigued me, so I bought one. It is smaller than I really wanted, but it has impressed me with the quality of construction and how well it cuts. I tested it the other day on a bunch of cardboard boxes, I was pleased with its performance. I suspect this knife will be in my pocket for a while.

Welcome back, CKE. Congrats on yer impending marital bliss. I sure hope that you have already introduced the blushing bride to be to the world of Spydies. Hmmmmm.. Wonder if Spyderco has a Bridal Registry

Ok, down to the question at hand:
I average two to three a month.
Now, I have to start budgeting - cause i want the.....
Spyderhawk
Native III
Paramilitary
Civie

Purchases in the last year:
*Late June: SpyderCard PE
*Mid-Late Aug: 303MF DoubleStuff(lost my other one when I walked down to get a MO for Linda)
*Late Aug: Millie CE, Native FRN CE/SE, Merlin PE
Late Nov - Dec(working on): Meerkat(on the way), Endura, 2 Salsas[and an inova x5mt before xmas]... 4 knives in one shot...

8 in the last year, so about every 1.5 months I average... but I buy a few at a time.

I guess I average about 1/month. I collect more than use (only ever use a ladybug daily, and endura weekends). All the rest are in safe keeping. I like to look for rare ones that are interesting in looks or feel (CF Walker, Damascus Worker, Probe and Pre-Diver). Not many around at reasonable prices.

The only way I can buy anymore knives (at least for the near future) is if I happen to win the Lottery (and that prospect isn't looking too good at this point.).

HOWEVER...I DO have a G-10 Police model on its' way to me from ATE, so that'll satisfy me for quite awhile..

I buy s whenever I have the chance. I have been doing alot of trading over the past few weeks, though, for Spydies and other gear.

My newest s will be a Military CE (from ATE ) and a LNIB green Salsa PE(for only $30 shipped!) that I should be getting in sometime this week.

CKE good luck and congrads on your marriage.
like easyrider said i'm just a user not a collector. and i see a lot of people get them spydies all the time. it is a real treat for me to get one and when i do it's because i just had to have it. most of my money goes to food, gas, house payment, taxes, the kid's braces, and on and on and on....ken

First congratulations on your marriage. May that you share many happy years with your chosen one.
As for spidies, I am ashamed to confess that I seldom buy spidies. First, due to financial reasons, second because they are impossible to find here. Fortunately I get some new stuff from my friends - especially from our Spidie Santa Allen (ATE)

You guys are going to hate me but..... I go thru Lindas inventory and if I see something I like I just kind of ... pick it up and put it with "our" collection. It seems like I get a new every few weeks. Its good to be married to Glasshartt

CKE,

I'm like Rico with the binding contract to buy whenever they come out. However, I have been mainlining pure s lately. I did a Spyderhawk, a CF Police, and a Micarta SPOT yesterday and had to snort 5 Qs from Eric G. for lunch today. I've tried to go cold steel...I mean turkey or limit myself to 3 - 4 Spydies a month but there's just too many variations and new models out there. Coffee and Spydercos! Where does it end?!

Anyways, congratulations on the upcoming nuptials! Hopefully you can keep your buys at a couple or more a month. Better yet break the young Mrs CKE in properly with necessities like a Mini-Police necklace, Ladybugs, and Jesters. Then follow up with the cadre of kitchen cutters like the Santoku, Sashimi, etc. We'll see her at the SATC in no time! Good luck!!

Hey Thanks everybody for the great posts! Sorry it took so long to get back to you all. I have decided to put about 25 dollars a paycheck away and that way I should be able to get the fix I need. Except for special occasions. There are a few that I would not even hesitate to buy...G-10 Bob T. SR. for one.
