ALMOST bought one (SS) "Pro Venator" at

a local pawn shop, until the owner told
me it was his, that he used it.

I don't buy used, only "floor model(s)"

that have been slightly "broken in". My

P&S / CE Native comes to mind....

ATE> remember, used = low price(they have it marked at $80? offer $20 for the used one, and end your haggling at $40)... can always pay for shipping and sent it back to factory for refurb...

I'v carried a Pro for prob the last three years. I have one I rotate with my other EDC's and one I carry whenever I ride. I have never had a problem with it coming out of my pocket even when working cattle for most of the day. As for the knife itself I would say it's one of the best.

You folks haven't mastered the fine art of bargaining, have you?

I can take something for $60 and get it down to $30, given a few minutes' time. It just takes a little skill.

Maybe a "Bargaining FAQ" would be an idea... Mr. Talmadge? Are you listening?

I know the art of bargaining but sometimes "got to have it" comes into play. I got this Pro-Grip SS for $46.00 shipped. Somehow, my criteria for a Spyderco folder is influenced by the blade shape. Anything with a blade resembling a Wegner is OK. Now I have to deal with the Shaberia and the Chinook. So much for blade loyalties. Jerry

My first Spyderco was a Hunter, which I believe is the all stainless steel version (no rubber insert). It still serves me well. Anybody else with a Hunter?

Had a Hunter for over 10 years. Finally lost it in a ski trip. Closest replacement I could find was the SS pro Venator. Hated the Kraton clip insert. After 2 or 3 years, the insert ripped out from getting stuck all the time. After that the clip was no longer the right size to stay in my pocket. Consequently, lost that one in short order. Now, I'm waiting for Santa to bring me a new Hunter that I found on the net.
By the way, either here or on Bladeforums, Sal said the Kraton insert was discontinued. Unfortunately no one seems to cary that version, because every site I've searched on makes a big deal about that idiotic Kraton insert.
Hope Santa gets here soon!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately, the fine art of horsetrading has been all but lost in pawn shops. Most are now becoming corporations, with their inventory and pricing all computerized.

Instead of being able to haggle with a savvy pawnbroker about price, the high school droput behind the counter now says "I'll have to ask my manager" and the manager is governed by corporate pricing policies.

There's one chain here that won't discount ANY in the first 30 days something's on the floor. Then the second 30 days, they're limited to 10%.

Now on the various knife exchange forums on the net, we're free to haggle and wheel and deal to our heart's content

My Pro Grip is here! Really impressed by the heft, the sharpness, the blade shape, the smoothness of the action and even like the Kraton side panel. Check out the blade shape and length etc. compared to the Wegner Jr. Which is my favorite. This would be a perfect EDC except for the (non) clip. Hard to clip into and out of your pocket due to the goofy Kraton insert. Can see that it will be a problem. See a couple of alternatives: 1. Handle it, put it into the collection or re sell it (Nah, like it too much). 2. Remove the clip and carry it in my pocket like the typical slip joint. 3. Remove the Kraton insert, re-arch the clip end, re-tension and re-attach. 4. Order a clip from any one of many Spyderco's with the same screw hole deminsions and use it. A great knife. A shame about the clip. Jerry.

Hey Lobsta- I believe I found a Hunter for you, if you're still looking. Check out hamonoichiba.com. Fair warning, the site's in Japanese, and all the prices are in yen. It may be a good idea to run it through babelfish first, then run the prices through a currency converter.

Never underestimate the impossible.

Long time Harley riders know that David Allen Coe's friend Steve Goodman added a few lines to a song and made it into the "Perfect Country and Western Song" (You Don't have to call me Darlin'). I took the clip off the Pro Grip, added a shoestring noose and feel that I have made it into the perfect everyday carry! Jerry

Hey Fred, your image1 looks like my loved & longlost Hunter from the 1980's. Your solution for the Pro-Grip isn't quite what I personally would chose. As far as retensioning the clip, I tried that after the Kraton ripped out. No luck. Never got around to calling Syderco to see if I could get a standard clip.
Sword, thanks for hamonoichiba.com site, but I'm too leery to try & order from there.

Lobsta 1:
You are right about the clip. I Put it away in the box and am going to try and buy an SS clip from Spyderco from a Wegner. Looks to be the same screw hole measurements. Got this Pro Grip off ebay. Same guy had a plain handled Vesuvius for $33 but someone snatched it up before me. I don't find deals like this very often. Jerry

Lobsta- I've heard nothing but good about that site, but as always, caveat emptor.
