Next Size Up

#1

Post by quickster47 »

So far I have been an avid Dragonfly collector and user but am now looking to move up to something like the next size. And that leads to me to my question, what would be a step up from the Dragonfly. Would it be the Native or some other?

I am retired, 67 years olds, and carry some type of knife every day around my 45 acre homestead. Not a hard user but sure enjoy sharp blades, good steel, nice scales and don't mind showing off what I'm carrying on any particular day.

All input is appreciated.

To make things a little more informed, I do have several other Spyderco knives, a Delica 4, couple of Mannix 2s, 3 Ladybugs, 5 Manbugs, a Yojimbo, a Dodo, a Karahawk, 4 Swicks, a Street Bowie, a Schempp Rock, 13 of the Mule Team blades, and a Rubicon on the way.

Imo, from what you say, please treat yourself to either a Domino or Dice. Both hail from Taichung, and are just spectacular fit and finish.
And both feature premium CTS-XHP steel.
I feel you will truly enjoy either flipper. :)
*we posted at the same time. I see you have a flipper on the way in the Rubicon. Maybe strongly consider the Sage 1.
*LOL* can't believe I didn't recommend the Nilakka! If you want flat out amazing sharpness out of the box, and it has the smoothest action I've ever saw- get a Nilakka

Hi Carl,

I agree with the recommendations for the Chaparral and Caly 3 or 3.5. I would also look at the Native. The Centofante 3 would be a good option, as well as the new Kiwi.

I moved up from the dragonfly to the chaparral, but then I got the sage 1 and it is the knife I use pretty much every day. That being said, I'd carry my chap, but I've been doddling sending it in for warranty.

The sage 1 is amazing, probably it's the washers in it, so smooth to open. The fit and finish is great and the carbon fiber scales rarely show wear. Unlike some g10 handles you have to take a magic eraser to if you look at them wrong.
Current favorite: Manix 2 with carbon fiber scales and cru-ware.

I say that the Native 5 is one step larger than the Dragonfly.

The next size would be a delica. It is not too large but it is very well designed and you can get a very comfortable 4 finger grip.

Carl,
Native5 will be the great option. You can get a lightweight, if you care about weight. You can get CF/S110V, if you like CF and /or care about super wear resistant steel. Or Ti fluted, if you want to impress people, including yourself

Caly3.5 also will be a great option. I love this knife, but Native5 just little more comfortable in my hand.
You will not go wrong with any Caly or Native5

These two work very well together.

I carry a serrated Robin2 at work, a Cara Cara Rescue 2 in the glove box, and a ZDP Dragonfly or Junior everywhere else. My PM2 sits on a shelf with a small assortment of Kershaws.
Waiting patiently for the Native 5 lightweight and the Lil' Temperance 2.

The actual next size up would be, in order:
1. Cat. A lot of knife for the money (not expensive at $46) and has a large pivot. It gives you a 2.4 inch blade.
2. Chaparral. It is a gentleman's knife and though barley larger closed than the DF the blade is much longer.
3. Delica. Great knife that gives you the same blade length as the Chaparral, but the handle is longer.

Any of these three would be a great choice.
