I need a coconut opener. Suggestions?
Hey guys, I want a knife to keep in the truck. Mainly for chopping the tops off coconuts at the beach. A normal person would just buy a short machete and call it a day, but come on...where's the fun in that?! So what would you guys suggest? Needs a tough steel and needs to be a decent chopper. Obvious choice is a fixed blade but I even wondered if a Tuff would do the job. (Though that's just mainly me looking for an excuse to buy a Tuff!) :D. So, any suggestions?

BRK Golok. I had one, it was a beast. Also not too big.

I'd go with the Condor Village Parang myself.

A sharp knife is a pleasure to carry. Five or six sharp knives are an even greater pleasure.

I know this is the Spyderco forum but I am an Esee fan.
Here is your coconut splitter.

I have an Izula and Esee3 and love them.
Becker makes some knives that should make short work of a coconut as well.

If you must have a spydie maybe this would work.
I do not have one but I bet it would do the job.

If you want a spydie, schemp rock. :)
Re: I need a coconut opener. Suggestions?
The Schemp Rock is a little small for a kukri but looks like it is big enough to top a coconut.

I would choose the Schempp Rock from the current lineup, but if I could choose from any model.... The Forager or Forester would be my top pick.

When you use a fancy knife for a $10 machete task you are always sorry later.

That is my concern also. But either way, I definitely wouldn't use a folder for this task. The Schemmp Rock would probably be my choice too.zhyla wrote:When you use a fancy knife for a $10 machete task you are always sorry later.

The Tuff is certainly tough enough, but lacks chopping ability. It is still just a folder.
I'm not sure VG10 in the Schempp Rock or N690co in the Hossom range have the impact resistance you need for chopping coconuts on a regular basis.
Best bet IMO is a cheap machete or something like an ESEE 5/6 or Junglas or similar.
I've used a 6 inch fixed blade Koster in 3V for coconuts, no issue with the steel.

ESEE Junglas. That said though, you should buy a Schempp Tuff anyways because it's a badass knife.

I used Enlan EL08 once to break down a coconut, not chopping though, more push/press cutting. Edge thickness and robust pins were crucial.

So a Tuff might work similarly.
Or a machete

Going to the hardware store tomorrow with $20 to solve this dilemma.

Whimp. Chris Reeve Knives has the right knife for this. 10" of 3V, $600. :spyder:
