OT : "Butterfly" knives ; opinion(s)

To - ALL-

I posted this topic on Bladeforums.

I was just wondering, fellow

forumite(s), with the advent of

the <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>fly, what your "take"

on this type of knife was?

Me : I tend to disdain them,

as, like a piano, they are

best demonstrated by those

proficient in their use.<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

How do you feel in this

regard?

To me, butterfly knives seem to fit almost exclusively into the realm of MBC. I would never have one as an EDC only perhaps as a collector's-type item. I just don't see an advantage to having one for general use as my other Spydies fit that niche very well.

PS: ATE - I recieved your package yesterday and sent you an email of thanks.

ATE,

I agree with Medic. Can't see them as an EDC due to the laws and negative press that balisongs have received in the past. I agree with and like your piano simile, especially since the only thing I can play with any degree of proficiency is a kazoo. (I could say bagpipe, since they never sound like they're in tune or following any melody!) I will however buy them as collectors items and quietly cut myself in private practice! <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Bring on the <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>fly

hmm... a <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> fly eh? perhaps i would obtain one as a collector's piece but other than that i would be uncomfortable carrying it as a daily use knife because possession of one in this state is a felony. being a felon was not high on my list of things to do with my life.

What Java said <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

I love my fingers too much to use Bali's, but I'd get a Spyderco one anyway <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

the <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>fly will be one of the few <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> I'll buy just to have, not to carry.

Balis are illegal to carry up here, don't know what the laws are regarding ownership in a collection but I'll have to find out.

My aunt in washington (state) has told me that if I wanted an auto or bali, just to pay her for it, and she would order & find a way to get it to me. Either in peices or packing it on stowed luggage and making a visit...

Balis are a fun thing to play with, but require large amounts of manual dexterity and a large supply of first aid equip to learn.

And shepherds we shall be, for thee my lord for thee. Power hath decended forth from thy hand so our feet may swiftly carry out thy command. And we shall flow a river forth to thee and teaming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, Et Filii, Et Spiritus Sancti.

I've got a soft spot for Bali's. I carried one as a work knife for a couple years when I first started work (many moons ago <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> ). Also I'm addicted to gadgets and small mechanical toys, so I like the Bali for a few reasons.

Funney enough I consider them more as a work knife than an MBC knife. My reason is that for an MBC knife I want to put hand to pocket and come up with an open knife with minimal thought, the more actions needed to open a knife, the more chance adenalen has to kick in and throw your timing off. I find Spydies fall very well into this catagory of simple but effective.
A work knife rarely needs such fast opening. Plus when work gets boring you can amuse yourself flipping your bali <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Walk softly, carry a big stick.

BUTTERFLY KNIFE / BALI SONG

YES INDEED - I WILL GET ONE.
Benchmade has some real sweet one's. And WHY NOT for EDC? They offer different blade styles and do have nice features, better than the old one's. And just because of bad press!!!!! That was back in the 60's when that was the choice of motorcycle gangs ect.
Why heck your civilian's, merlin's and harpy's look more intimidating-faster too! Maybe they should be outlawed? bali-song's are against the law here in calif. what can i say we do have some stupid laws.
Anyway you all play with those spydies and i'm sure you've been bit too, but when you learn how to use a bali-song you sure can make them sing! They are a fun knife. But don't just buy one because spyderco makes one. Buy one because you want one and will use one. Very simple knife really. and you asked for my opinion---------ken

I've been into butterflies. Not any more. Anyway, I'm dying to see how Spyderco deals with this sort of knife.

Ken -

"for the record" I ( with EMPHASIS ) did

NOT CITE "LEGALITIE(S)"! This seem(s)

to be the quip of the "commoner"

nowaday(s), mark me, Ken, I worked for

a lawyer many eon(s) ago & I think the

concept of the "law" exalted by the

"commoner" ( read : UN-WASHED!<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>) is

nothing more than "bombastic bullsh*t".

The "commoner" oft elect(s)

"official(s)" to pass "Draconian,

"punitive", amorphorus, iconoclastic

"measure(s)" loosely ( and I DO mean

"loosely"<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>) refered to as "law(s)"!

The "late" Sen. Mack of Ill., who(m)

managed to get an "iconoclastic,

Draconian "measure" of a "Bill" passed

into "law" in I believe it was !957,

in the form of the "Federal

Switchblade Act" of same approximate

aforementioned year. I ALSO find it

most strange ( if YOU Will, Ken!) that

Mr. Glesser & Co. are also of note in

citation of that which is ( or SEEM(S)

to be!) "legal"<img src="sad.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> To which I say :

SPARE ME!<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>) and same said Co,( read :

<img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>!<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>) produce(s) something ( <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>fly!)

( or SEEM(S) to!<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>) that is ( or would

SEEM to be ) in violation of that

which They (<img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0&gt<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> seem to "flog about"

as the "commoner/Plebicite" DOE(S)!

HYPOCRICY! Say I!!! And say no more!

don't mean a thing ( if it ain't got

that Swing&quot<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> for me to yourself, when

you get a chance, will you PLEASE!?!

And, per chance you obtain youself a

"butterfly/bali/barong widget" do it to

the tune of this song. THANK YOU!

IT DON'T MEAN A THING (IF IT AIN,T GOT THAT SWING)

What good is melody, what good is music
If it ain't possessin' something sweet
It ain't the melody, it ain't the music
There's something else that makes the tune
complete
It don't mean a thing, if it ain't got that swing
It don't mean a thing, all you got to do is sing
It makes no diff'rence if it's sweet or hot
Just give that rhythem ev'rything you got
It don't mean a thing, if it ain't got that swing

ALLEN - This fit's real good. I'm mad because i didn't think of it.

WE ALL BETTER GET US A BUTTERY FLY KNIFE - WHY? "BECAUSE IT DON'T MEAN A THING (IF IT AIN'T GOT THAT SWING)

THANKS KEN
