Sal,

I believe that I read that you had questions about this film using Spyderco knives in it. I think you were wondering if they were going to change them from the book/contact you for permission, or something like that. I just thought that I would let you know if you don't already, that it appears to me, in the new issue of Total Movie, that there is a Harpy in one of the stills they used to promote the movie in the magazine. If you would like I will get a pic posted somewhere so you can look for yourself, but it appears to be deployed in a picture from the movie on pg. 54. I just thought you should be aware if you aren't already.

Hi Tique. Thanx. No we haven't heard yet.

We are honored that our knife would be selected. It is a problem in that on the good side, it will probably increase the demand for the model, but on the negative side, those that already are afraid of knives will become even more so with Spyderco in that fear.

It is not our intention to create fear in people. We just try to build superior performing products.

Sal,
I understand completely where you are coming from.
I was just giving a heads up.
The link to the pick is http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?u=1 ... p=37308691
And keep up on the superior performing products. I am looking forward to seeing some of the new stuff after SHOT.

Wow! You would think they would at least get permission. I predict this will be great publicity for Spyderco. Maybe not the kind they want. I wonder why he would choose a harpy? Someone should tell him that the Wegner is a lot better for skinning. <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

dennis,

I think if I remember correctly from the book, which I read early last year, that he used the Harpy for an upward slice from the pelvic area to the lower ribs. Gruesome! I think he also used a Civilian model later in the book for skinning.

Thanks for letting us know about this. When the book first came out we were torn....great publicity but our knives were relected in a manner we don't condone. We wrote Thomas Harris, thanked him, and let him know our concerns.

We decided to take it as a compliment. Hannibal in the book (although fictional) only drives, eats and uses top drawer items, Merecedes, Beluga caviar and Spydercos. You know what they say in PR...."at least they spelled our name right!"

Neer mind Hannibal, howzabout a good guy using a Spyderco? I think Bond should use a Native II (sleek & elegant) in his next flick. I doubt even Q could improve on a Spyderco design.

I never read the book nor saw the movie but I'm curious as to why Hannibal is choking down on the handle (toward the butt end) of a stainless steel model? Is he looking at his reflection? Is it a "Hollywood pose" to make the knife look longer? It doesn't seem to be a practical grip for real use.

Yo toothed! Hannibal's'choked'knike grip is indeed a Hollywood device;much like the"cheryl"(I believe is the name:whichever it was of the original'Charlie's Angels'that usually carried a gun)where the handgun is held near the actor's head. The idea is to show the actor's face & firearm in the same shot;to show the strain on the actor's face preceeding the confrontation while establishing that he is armed. Both can be used in a'practical' situation, but like flying side kicks are of limited use.

Correction:The weapon-near-head/face position is called the"Sabrina"after the character in'Charlie's Angels' & it is indeed a Hollywood pose for the reasons stated in my previous post.My apologies for the error.
SOME IPSC shooters do indeed use this position as having the weapon in line-of-sight allows maginally(hundreths of a second)target aquisition.Practical or combat shooters frown on it for the following reasons:
1.Holding the weapon in this position obscures part of your vision.
2.It is relativly easy to disarm a person holding a weapon in this position at close quarters:grab the pistol(NOT the hand)& either slam it against the person's head/face or rip it from their hand by levering it backwards against the thumb/wrist.If the person is holding a knife(ala Hannibal)grab the HAND,twist & slash the holder's head/face.(Bloodthirsty bugger, ain't I?*G*)
3.In the event of an accidental discharge of a handgun the bullet will go up & God knows where it will come down.Better the'Low Ready'position(handgun held at waist level barrel down)so the bullet will strike the ground. It Is Written:"Whatever that bullet hits you just bought;be it plate-glass window or 4 year-old child". Sorry to be so long-winded;just wanted to be clear.Respects.

I read the book back when it was published in '99 (what a wild ride!) Dr. Lecter used the Harpy with great effectiveness throughout the book. However the movie failed to focus on the knife as keenly as the book did. FYI in the book neither the Harpy nor Civilian was ever used for "skinning". In the book he purchased a replacement Harpy at a gunshow after retuning to the U.S., there he also obtained "a serrated Spyderco with a four inch blade", the Civilian, and a game saw as well as a crossbow. BTW I did have a rep. from Onestopknifeshop in Jacksonville, FL recently tell me that the've been selling mucho Spyderco Harpys' since the movie came out! I think it has been a positive advertisment for Spyderco.

After watching Hannibal movie last week I recalled a Harpy model at the dealer store. It was quite expensive at that time so I decided to wait till prices drop or an unexpected sale at that store. There was only one left and by the time it took me from the cinema to the store it was gone! I still can not get over it... GRRR!
Nice raptor like blade shape.
