I almost never buy exact duplicates. I do have two Centofante Memorys, but that's only because one is modded, and the other kept original. I always choose variety over duplication.

I have and sold off the spares to buy other Spydies. The only way it makes sense (IMO) is if you are exceedingly pragmatic (ie: I'll use the same knife for years), a collector who wants to use and keep one nice, or someone with a sizable hobby budget.

If having a spare of your favorite knife helps you sleep better and use it as a tool, it seems like a great investment. :)

I've owned several versions of some knives (sprints) but eventually weed it down to the one I like the most, and then I try to buy a backup of that knife if it isn't standard production. Those of us who have felt the burn of one of our favorites getting discontinued have grown wise enough to plan ahead.

I have a second Lionspy, which is a pricey one to have a second of. I do love the knife, but am hoping to trade it in the future for a ti millie. Having two of such a beefy and durable knife isn't necessary ha.
So many spydies, not enough pockets.

I used to have quite a few "back-ups" At one time I had 9 large bolstered Persians, four small Persians and four G10 Caly3. I have much less now.

My top choices Natives5, Calys, C83 Persian

The only exact duplicate I own is the Stretch I in SS with inserts. It was too hard to find the first time so I purchased a backup when I could.

I've got a few duplicates that were bought for collecting purposes or whatever, I guess they could be considered backups. With Spydercos there is so much variety that I can have a lot of similar models and consider some of them to be backups even though they are not exact duplicates of what I am using.

I'm really bad for this, I had 2 of every para2 sprint for a while, and pretty much buy two of every knife I like haha

It's not a backup, it's a pre-need replacement. ;)

That's my thought as well. I rarely even buy two of a single model even if they have different handles/steels, as I'd rather try out something entirely different then get more of the same or similar. I have a few exceptions: I own a bunch of Mules, two red Persian sprints, two 2013 Forum Natives, and two Dialex Juniors.

Frequently. I've been making good ground on getting my addiction under control though. I only get jitters on the odd occasion.
