Is there wear / damage to the frn? Might a solution be to thin that out a little, or does the blade touch metal?

Yeah, so the blade edge contacts the steel spring when it is closed.

Alternate solution might be to grind the blade back a bit so it doesn't contact the spring, or send it back to Spyderco and see if they can do that for you.
