kp ~ Rare SS PE Harpies were made at one time but were phased out a while back. Actually, Mr Hasegawa of Hamoniochiba.com can still find a few lying around his shop.

Glenn :

This bit about PE Harpy is (yet) another <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> mis-print ; they did make'em
awhile back, but the buzz is, it ain't happenin' again anytime soon (just ask kraziekurtis<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>) BTW : If you REALLY want a "head trip"<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> check ot the box of the PE "merlin" I sent ya'; it says PE Harpy
(lightweight), had to go back to the Y2K
catalog to get THAT ONE straight!
Go figure.

Knifepunk-
Just so we are clear, this is an old PE Harpy with the vent in the scale. Just says Spyderco on one side and Seki Japan on the other. Wanted to be upfront on the deal.

ps- its like the bottom one in Al's pic

They're coming to get you, Barbara..

Last I heard it may be plausible to order one from Japan, I was thinking it was one of the main distributors for G. Sakai. They seemed a bit pricy IIRC but that particular model, at least the SS-handled version as in the film version of "Hannibal" commands more on the collector's market than most :spyder: hawkbills. Good luck!

Close to a zombie thread record for sure. :D

As for the current PE Harpy situation, given that YOUWANTIT2 has stopped self-importing them, ordering the SS/VG-10 "Japanese market version" directly from G Sakai is probably the only/best option. Won't be cheap, and may require the help of someone who can read and speak Japanese, but the original ones still command fairly hefty prices and have the one piece mainspring/backspacer combo that's prone to failure from old age.

If you're extremely lucky Spyderco made the PE Harpy with the Carbon Fiber handle and they do come up for sale but rarely. I used to own 2 of them but sold them when funds got tight. I really regret that one as well.

Now I can tell you that when they made the G-10 Harpy I was told by a very reliable source that they only made the G-10 Harpy in full SE. So don't waste your time looking for one of those.

They do have the PE Tasman available but if your taste in folders is like mine you would rather have the Harpy. The Harpy seems to have much more ridgid construction. I can't for the life of me understand why they don't reintroduce the G-10 Harpy especially with the success they've had with the newer G-10 Police model.

If you find one of the older ATS-55 Harpys in plain edge I would keep it as a collector piece because there are not many of those around at all. But if you are looking for one to carry you can't beat the VG-10 version.

Truth be told, I wouldn't mind seeing at least a sprint run of the G-10 in VG-10 combination. I'm game for at least a couple of them myself.
