How many of you forumite(s) own ( or prefer )
smaller knive(s)? I had a dear late friend,
Bob Biemler ( Nam Vet, Navy SEAL ) who(m) extold the virtue(s) of a small blade : "All
you need is about a two inch blade..." (R.I.P.) I was never much into knives originally, but when I discovered and the cricket I became a "knifeknut" ( all shapes, sizes & makes ). I think if you really want to cut something you really don't need much over 2" and I think that's what my SEAL friend was gettin' at. For me, it's the SE cricket , but consider the other(s) forumite(s) : The Ladybug, Jester, Dragonfly, Navigator, Merrkat(s), Pegasus, and let us not forget the prodigal Salsa ( w/nested compression lock, which I might add
doesn't have the quirk(s) of the Vesuvius )
I also like the "gentlemen's knife" concept of a smaller blade, and if you had to defend yourself in a pinch with such a diminuative blade, you probably could repell the attacker. How do you forumite(s) feel about this? And, what's your favorite "little BIG knife"?

My fav is the ss dragonfly PE. It feels like a much larger knife in hand, and it has a good point. 2" is all you would need to cut a major artery or (if you're strong enough) pierce the heart.
I don't consider my 'fly a fighting knife, or even much of a weapon at all, but any tool is better than none.
When I handled the FRN cricket, it was just too light for my tastes, and I didn't like the way it felt when gripping it with my whole hand.
I'm awaiting a vesuvius, and I hope it doesn't exhibit the problems I've heard about on this board.
Praise not the day before evening has come, a sword before it is tried, ice before it has been crossed, and beer before until it is drunk.

I find that during the week I tend to carry small knives such as the Calypso Jr, Dragonfly and now the Kiwi. On the weekends I carry a small knife and a large one such as the Military or large Calypso. I try not to draw attention so the little blade is the one I use the most. The large blade is for those situations that the small one just cannot handle, such as getting peanut butter from the bottom on the jar. You just don't want peanut butter in your folder. ;-)

I just couldn't agree more. I found that a 2" blade is more than enough for regular cutting chores (including repelling attackers, if you may call it a regular chore . I know that it is better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6, yet using a big knife could do worse than repelling an attacker. It could severely injure or even kill him and you'll have more problems. Though, quite important for me, they are not suitable for food preparation - just try to slice a loaf of bread with the Ladybug
Now there are "minispidies" - Meerkat, Navigator, Pegassus, Salsa, Kiwi and "microspidies" - Ladybug, Jester, Cricket (I presume). The Delica, Calypso jr. would be "medium spidies".
And finally I want to make a statement: I like all small spidies, which does not happen with medium and big ones.

Talk about some well thought out responses!!!! I don't think that the Jester is getting as much respect it deserves. The texturing on the spine of the blade makes for fantastic thumb purchase. Talk about some weight behind the blade! For day to day chores, for the given size, the Jester is wonderful! Just me I guess!

When it comes to the little knife class, I simply love the Mouse. Best cutting knife I won, and that's saying something! (Are you listening, Case?)
I like to use big knives (OT-6, Endura) for big jobs, but for everyday use, the Mouse suits me just fine.
Never underestimate the impossible.
