your favorite spyderco "themes"

#1

Post by shotcaller88 »

Ever since I started collecting spydies, I went for certain themes. Does anyone else have this tendency? I also like a ton of random knives, but here's some of my "themes"

Favorite steel: ZDP (I'm missing the mule and a few newer ones Caly 3.5, CF Dragonfly, manbug--have the rest!)
Favorite knife: Stretch (have all production [no wood bolsters] still need to buy blue nishijin)
Favorite scales: Carbon Fiber (have 30+. missing a bunch. I love the old ones. My favorites are stretch, delica and harpy.)

Other Favorites:
Delica (have 20+, missing tons, will not try for them all)
Para 2 (all sprints)
Mule (missing 5 or 6)

For a while I was trying to complete a Foliage Green collection.
Going forward, I'm most excited about my Super Blue collection.
I'm least excited about Nishijin, but can't seem to avoid buying them.

I've always been much more interested in the Collaborations than the standard production knives. Something about their unique blade shapes draws me in. My favorite knives, are the Breeden Captain, Michael Janich Yojimbo2, and the Centofante 4. I also had a Schempp Khukuri Jens Anso Techno and a Bob Lum Chinese and Tanto Folder, but had to sell them to fund graduation gifts, because for some reason they didn't want the knives as gifts :p

I also was on a Gray G-10 kick, having all but the 20CP PM2, but abandoned that because I always used the Caly 3.5 over the 3, and as mentioned before sold the Lum Tanto Folder.

Right now I have kind of stopped buying knives for my collection and been aiming more towards general use, my last few purchases were the Kitchen Knives and the Mules, which mainly see kitchen use. Easier to justify spending $400 when I am going to be using them all regularly in the kitchen than rotating the knives out every day or so to be pocket jewelry.

Although if I had to say what my current themes are, I would say I am drawn to the hard-use cheap abusers. I'm living at home after graduating with a bachelors and looking for a steadier job, so I do a lot of yard work for my parents and have found SE 440V to be a godsend.

I loved and had all the para2 sprints. Trying to not collect these days, but its hard. I find myself wanting to buy all the superblue frn sprints. But i know the endura would not get any use. and most likely the ladybug as well as my salt hawkbill model has been serving me great

Sounds like you need the CF ZDP Stretch

I am trying to get all the Taichung blades. I am missing the Tuff, Szabo, Hungarian, both Pukkos and Sage 4. Not sure if I'll finish the collections as most of the ones I don't have don't really interest me.

I am trying to collect all the Spydercos with round holes in the blade. Oh, and I bought a Jess Horn C27 just because it's the only Spyderco I could find without a hole. :p

I have an orange ukpk, a grey caly 3.5 SB, a caly 3 SB dyed blue (previous user), a black caly 3.5, and a brown calypso sprint. I can't help but line em up some times, 5 colors of g-10 caly knives if you count the pen knife.

My problem is I have to many "themes" I like :) .

I like CF and Nishijin.
I like Ti.
I like the Salts.
I like the Military, though I don't have *every* version of it (yet).
...
I guess it comes down to, I like sharp knives :D .

Result is I buy a LOT of Spydies... money for food and mortgage is over-rated :) .
Which Knife, A or B? get Both! (and C, D and E) :)

I like variety in my collection. But there are some collection themes.

All Schempp designs (I'm only missing the SS Balance).
All Para 2 sprints and exclusives.

I also like orange, and have many. But don't need to get every single one.
Ethnic knives are also always of great interest, but I only get the ones I like (which is most of them).

I love the swick theme. From the spot to the swicks to the bifold and the H-1 models, I have always been impressed by the utility, and the martial application of the Perrin hole. I wish I could get my hands on a bi-fold... maybe this year at the OKCA

So far my themes seem to be:
All the Sages (except the "new" Sage 3)

All the Chaps (#3 arrived today!)

Most of the Mules...

Most of the S90V (still need a Southfork)

And I'm hoping for more Southard collabs, before he joins up with some other company...

I have lots of trends and tendencies in my collection.

Manix 2
Military
Caly
Superblue
Delica
Native
Stretch
did I mention Superblue
and many of the Mules.

I don't see my trends changing, unless a new game-changing model comes along and unseats on of the greats in my collection
