Delica Scales

#1

Post by Officer Gigglez »

I like my Delica4, until I hold it. It has the Emerson opener, which is a big plus for me, but I hate the **** FRN scales. I prefer G10 much more over FRN/Polymer scales, so I have been looking for a solution to my FRN Delica problem. I have been unsuccessful in finding a G10 Delica to swap the blades out (If that would even work), or a solution at all. All I want is any type of scales on it that are not FRN. Its early in the morning and my brain is on a low sputter, given that I have had no coffee yet, leaving me drooling like a lobotomized mental patient. So, oh great forum goers, how am I to fix these offensive plastic scales?

FRN is great, just accept it and use that delica.
So many knives, so few pockets... :)

You could:
  • cover the FRN scales with veneer (wood, CF, or whatever)
  • make replacement scales without liners from the material of your choice
  • find some material the same thickness as the steel liners, make cutouts in that material to accept the liners, and glue it to thicker material to make 2 piece replacement scales
  • purchase, and learn to use, a surface mill then use it to mill out recesses for the liners in the scale material of your choice
  • purchase replacement scales from someone who makes them
  • or, as araneae suggested, learn to embrace FRN

If the stainless is too smooth add grip tape.

There is supposed to be a titanium Damascus delica which could also be a source for scales that are not frn.

I thought I didn't like frn. I was wrong.

Given that the SS Delica uses flush pins, rather than screws, that would be quite a feat.

Boomer52 does custom work that exceeds factory tolerances. Gator texture G-10 meets my needs.

No, it wouldn't be easy. I wouldn't try but the op was looking for anything but frn.

Free advice is worth what you pay for it sometimes. Sorry if it wasn't much help. :-)

+1 for Boomers. I would also like to say that i agree with people telling you to embrace FRN. When i first started buying spydercos i thought FRN was cheap and awful, but now its become my favourite handle material.

I don't think the FRN is cheap. I simply don't like the feel of plastic, as opposed to the heft and weight of steel and G10 or wood. Same goes for firearms. I'm not much for the Polymer framed handguns. It just feels cheap to me, even despite that I know it is durable. Its just preference. I can use FRN/Polymer all day, I just don't like it. My Tasman's FRN handles have grown on me, as the shape seems to fit my hand better, but I'd still prefer steel/G10
