Spyderco "Millenium" Clip-it
Spyderco "Millenium" Clip-it
How about a Spyderco "ultimate knife" for
the millenium ? It would be based on input
from all Spyderco owners ( blade type, blade
length, handle material, "locking mechanism",
etc.); example : my idea for the "Millenium"
would consist of a "Wharncliffe" blade, 27/8"
in length w/ partial serrations, FRN handle
in red, white or blue, liner locking mechanism, "tip down" carry, with an ideal
weight of 1.9oz ( hope Spyderco monitors this
page ). Or, better yet, one designed from
all given input, designed, as I stated earlier, by Spyderco owners.
Any ideas ? Post them here. Spyderco, heres
your chance !

Hi Sal and Allen,
Allen,
Interesting Idea! I'm afraid Sal is probably right that it will be difficult to get everyone to agree on the same thing though.
Also, I think we need to figure out how much we are willing to pay before we tackle a design, because a linerlock, G10 and cpm 440v are going to cost a heck of a lot more than a lockback, FRN, and ats-55. My vote is we shoot for the price range of the endura, or slightly higher. rather than an "ultimate knife", we should look to make a "special millenium edition".
Sal,
I assume from an engineering standpoint that if it were to have a FRN handle, that you would probably need to do a lockback design rather than a liner lock?
Also, the question of handle color makes me wonder something; all of your FRN handles are one solid color. Is it feasible from a manufacturing standpoint to have a "marbelized" design with streaks of different colors? such that we might have a red AND white AND blue handle? Now that would be Special!, and maybe a metal bug inlay, similar to the medallion on the starmate!

FRN would be cheaper if it an existing FRN mold. Such as the Endura, Delica, Rescue & Jr, etc.
I believe that we can mix colors (streak) or make a cammo "style". We would need to make 500 FRN pieces to pay to fire up the machine.
500 might be a large amount to sell to a small forumite group. ????

How about a sprint run of FRN Millenium Natives. It could be done in a red, white, and blue pattern. I think you could get a good part of the 500 between the forum here and Blade Forums. I would imagine there would be interest in it. We could keep the existing 440V blade so it would be well useful, and that way it would just be a modified current production to keep the price down and a quite popular model to keep interest up.
It would be nice if there could be some sort of inlay of the bug like on the Terzuola.

I think that history has shown (BF native, BF matriarch) that forumites can only absorb a small part of a 500 piece run.
A Millennium Clipit IMO would have to have mass-market appeal for general sale to ELU.
How about dusting off the "R" knife tooling, but this time making it without the skeletonizing? The basic design of a flat-ground 3.5" blade, and almite handle would make for a great utility piece.

My suggestion for a millennium knife would be to decide on one design (Spyderco "signature" design or most popular to date or newly created) and let customers have it their way.
I'm suggesting something similar to how you can "custom" order a Buck Hunter from their website. Buyers would have options for blade material (ATS 55, BG 42, Damascus, 440V, etc.), scale material or inlay (G10, stag, titanium, MOP, wood, micarta, etc.), and other knife parts (?). By clicking on listed choices the customer would be able to see their own creation online before finalizing the order.
I think this would fill the void between stock knives (plentiful but indistinctive) and high-end customs (out of reach of most people's budget and rarely used by the owners of such luxuries). Of course, the knives would have to be priced to make the operations profitable. However, hopefully through the economies of scale (by mass-producing the interchangable parts) the knives would not be priced as high as some current custom offerings.
The idea is just a dream at this time but Spyderco might do a feasibility study on this concept if enough people show their interest. An option could include Sypderco licensing a third party to run the operation on its behalf. Happy New Millennium! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

Consider this Sal : If Our Nation can make
decisions based on a Congress and
Senate ( Pluralistic society ) I can't see
why all Spyderco owners can't decide
on a single design. As can be seen in the
replies to my topic some ideas are already
forming. I like the one with the Spyderco
logo embossed on the handle, perhaps
a lock-back, now all we need is a common
blade shape. Price ? well, my "Cricket"
cost me $50.00 and it's not only worth
every penny but also has great personal value to me. What can I say ?

Dear Sal ;
There seems to be a consensus among
forumites regarding the "Millenium" clip-it.
That being the use of an existining model
with "Millenium" modifications ; ( i.e. handle color ( red, white & blue mixed )), and the edition of the Spyderco medallion,
either on a "Millenium" Native or Endura.
Which I am for as well.
