Rumor Check

#1

Post by Zabrewolf »

Hullo!

Been hiding for awhile, but thought you people are the best source to dispel or confirm rumors I've heard about .

Any idea if it's true that is going to drop G-10 completely as a handle option? I know some knives have SS and G-10 variants and that the G-10 variants are being dropped (i.e. Police model) but dropping ALL G-10 handles!?!?

Also the Military is being redone with this new-liner-lock-on-the-spine thing? Really, the same lock as on the Salsa? That would make the Military a one hand open, two hand close knife. The point of that would be what?

I keep hearing the Lum tanto is going away, but is that the knife is completely going away or that they will no longer offer the shiny blade. The black blade will stay?

And I have heard the Pink Jester is bye-bye, but the lime-green stays. And I've heard the lime-green goes but the pink stays.

The people I have been hearing these rumors from say they have heard it from but some of the rumors conflict. Is there any way we fans can get a list of what is going and what is staying? If it is only variants of some of my favorites going away versus the entire design, I can be less panicked. Or if a favorite design of mine is soon to leave this Earth, I need to beg-borrow-or-steal the funds to secure a few spares.

Gods of Spyder Knowledge, Hear My Plea!!

IMO putting a comp lock on the Military would be a mistake. If any change is made I would rather see a ball lock.

Z Wolf,

My grandma used to say, "don't believe anything you hear and only half of what you see".... doesn’t always work but sometimes it does.

Spyderco will continue to use G-10 on many models. We're even looking at several new colors. The G-10 Police was discontinued a couple years ago.

Military model is being considered for a Compression Lock. Sal is always moving forward improving existing models. This would be an improvement.

Black coated C46 Lums are still around for 2003 as is the fixed-blade. Non-blacked version of the folder is being discontinued.

Pink Jester says bye, green and black stay.

Hope this helps.

Don't worry Zabrewolf, as well as being a very strong lock the compression lock is every bit as easy to close one handed as a liner lock. In fact it is a lot easier to close one handed when you consider it is a fairly ambidexterous, unlike the liner lock.

The compression lock really is an improvement IMO. I think it still needs some refinements, but hey, it's only two years old! Give the little one a chance
As about the G-10, one of the best materials so far... I don't think Spyderco can throw it away that easy

Joyce,
That is exactly why I like to check rumors. And this info does help a lot.

I'm not sure the Compression lock is good for the Military. I don't own a with a compression lock so I haven't had much practice but I don't see how you can close the knife one handed with that lock. Can anybody inform me how?

Patiently waiting for the Paramilitary and the Military revision with dual nested liners and the C lock.

I've always liked the blade of the Military, now I can buy one, or two...

I close a cmpression lock exactly the same way O close all my lock backs. Choke the hand up on the handle so my index finger is under the pivot, thumb the lock, quick flick of the wrist and the blade partially closes until the newly exposed part of the tang (or built in choil on some models) is stopped by the index finger, a quick twirl in the hand so the fingers are clear of the blade and close the blade the rest of the way with the thumb.

It's so much of a reflex now that I'm barely concious of it, be it a lock back or a compression lock.

Since the Spyderhawk will be G-10, the G-10 elimination rumor cannot be true.

Well...I thought the Spyderhawk was going to be an FRN model (at least the test run). This was in the Spyderhawk thread from Sal on BF some months ago now, though.

Whoops!
I stand corrected.
I reread a recent post.
