No, it isn't some rare disc'd model or sprint run, just a few gen 1 dragonflys. I LOVE the dragonfly 2's, and they are an improvement on the design( i have 3), but I really have a soft spot for the gen-1 dragonflys. I have a aus-8,PE no spyder logo model my wife bought me years ago. Since I only had the one, I kept it locked away and didn't use it in fear of losing/breaking it and have been on the lookout for a back-up one for a while. Since they are discontinued they are sometimes a chore to find, and when I do find them, they are usually more $$ than a gen 2 model.
But, last week was my lucky week. I managed to find a NIB VG-10 SE late gen -1 model for $40 shipped to my door. I would have preferred a PE version, but I was still happy about what I bought. Later that week I won a NIB/old stock PE d'fly 1 with aus-8 for $30. Now I have exactly what I want! Now, I can't believe this myself, but the day after I won the PE d'fly, I found someone selling a used d'fly 1 for $30. I took a chance and bought it and aside from a dulled factory edge and a small bit of lint, the knife was in excellent condition. I'll have to stop buying knives for a while now, but that's OK, because I am going to use my dragonfly as my primary edc for the forseeable future. Call me strange, but I'm just as excited to get these more common models as someone would be getting an ultra-rare or sprint model. Different strokes I guess.

Wow, great luck you've had finding those Dragonflys.
Guess it was your lucky week.

Congrats on the Dragonflies. Just to clarify, while Spyderco is calling the FRN Dragonfly with the wire clip the "Dragonfly 2", there were two "generations" of the integral clip FRN Dragonfly. The original ones had a lower profile, hollow saber ground blade, no spine bevel, and rounded transition between the spine and the thumb rest. Don't have mine handy to compare but, IIRC, there was also a minor change in the handle between those two versions.

You are correct. I have seen models like the version at the top sometimes come up for sale. Were those ever offered in PE? I also noticed there are other slight variations as far as the newer d'fly 1's are concerned. There are the ones with the spyderco logo, and ones without (older), earlier ones without the boye dent and the newer ones (some with AUS-8 and others with the VG-10 if I am correct) with the dent. I have also noticed that on the serrated models, the serration pattern was slightly different than the older ones. The older ones ended with the two small serrations near the tip, and the newer ones, such as the serrated version I just got, end with one large scallop near the tip. Could they have possibly changed the serration pattern during the transition from the AUS-8 to the VG-10 to better wotk with the new steel they were using? I'll have to go back and take a closer look at exactly what version of the D'fly's that I have.
