What Spyderco Families Do You Collect?

Postby hoytshooter16 » Mon Jul 22, 2013 9:37 pm

I went a little nuts buying Spydercos the last few months, recently I got back into collecting Spydies.
After buying and selling and cycling through different Spydies I've decided I want to focus on two Spyderco families. The Military/Paramilitary, and Police models.
Who else has collects specific makes and families of Spydercos and any suggestions of must haves to beef up the two rarer groups families I mentioned?
Luckily I have a few of each in these families but the Para 1 is a tough one to come across.

I try to pick up most of Ed Schempp's pieces. Stainless steel handles aren't for me, however, so I may pass on the Equilibrium unless they do a CF sprint or something.

I've also bought almost all of the Mules (I started too late to get #1 and #2, didn't have the money when #10 was available). This collection is mostly because I enjoy making the DIY aspect of making handles for them.

But besides that, I like to have a large variety of models vs. a large quantity of a single model. Since my money can only buy select Spydies, I'd rather try out completely different knives rather than variations of the same.

The only one I really collect is the Police Model. You might want to rethink that one unless you enjoy frustration and have really, really deep pockets. Here's a little food for thought:

There are no duplicates in this picture, and that is less than half the variations.

Not a family per se, but I'm a big fan of the Spydies made in Taiwan. The Gayle Bradley is my absolute favorite and the Southard and Tuff are on my to-buy list. There's just something about the blades coming out of Taichung that are really impressive. QC is excellent and I love the variety of knife styles they produce. I think a Zulu might actually be my next purchase.

good luck on your search, you haven't picked the easiest families...
most variations for the Police came out in the "youth" of the model, now we're on Gen 3 the oldest are tough to come by. even more in new condition. PIG, almite, Alu, CF are very rare. you have a good illustration in yablanowitz's picture.
same thing for the Military. a spyderco forum Military just sold for over 1000$ on e*ay...
as for the Para1/2, the CF S90V is selling for 600$ nowadays...

I do not collect families at least any more.
My interest with Spyderco sparked when I learned about Kopa. I decided that I will collect entire set. And I did. But there were couple variants, when I really had hard time to spent money on. After that I decided to buy only knives, which I really love or at least like. There are too many knives and not enough money. I love my Persians, but I didn't buy any Persians2. I love my Calys, but not a fan of carbon steel or laminated blades, so I skipped those. and so on...........

My top choices Natives5, Calys, C83 Persian,Hungarian, Memory

I have:

All 16 Kopas
All the Jess Horn models and variants
All the Goddard models and variants with the exception of a couple FRN serrated ones
All the regular Spyderkeys with the exception of the all stainless one
All the production Kiwis, plus a prototype and a whole lot of customized ones
All the forum knives from this forum
Currently working on Q's have about half of the roughly 70 versions that were made

Ladybugs :spyder:
They're relatively cheap, easy to collect and just so darn cute. :D

I was inspired by Mr. Blonds blog post about his Ladybug Victorinox combos and decided I was going to try and pair each of my ladybugs with a AAA flashlight. I still plan on getting the Salt SE, Stainless SE and on the hunt for the elusive Albino Ladybug SE, Mircarta and FRN Jesters. :spyder:

None. Collecting is lame and takes a blade out of the hands of a would be user, much like flipping a knife for profit.
But seriously, the only Spydie I have multiple of is the Mule.

You're still butthurt from that one, hahaha.

A few people here don't like the pure flippers, deal with it. :p

Thanks for the good replies guys!
Yeah I don't have deep pockets so I know I'm gonna hit some walls with the Police model. That one just hits close to home and I've put the Police Model and Military families up there. Without the deep pockets I may try and target a few key models and beef up the over all collection of the two.

Those are great pictures of tour collections. Keep them coming it never gets old!

They'd all eventually go into a rotation and get used. I don't mind buying used either so they'd get double use essentially.

I would love to collect the sage family, but funds don't really permit right now. So I think I am going to go with the tenacious family for now.
