BACK UP UNITs: A Necessity!!! Not a luxury

#4

Post by JD Spydo »

Gee I don't know if I got time or even if there is enough room to write them all down  But I can tell you that there have been well over 30 of them over the past 10 years.

There is one coming up later this summer that I plan to try to get 3 of and that being the Sprint C-44 Dyad. I've had several of what I commonly refer to as "BACK UP UNITS" ( BUU). I have at least 9 Spyderco Hawkbills that are in my user EDC rotation. I even just recently aquired another C-111 Captain model because I do carry one often so I definitely had to have a BACK UP UNIT to that bad boy

I'm currently looking hard for a BACK UP UNIT for my older but much loved Stainless RESCUE model ( C-45).

Most all of my hard working job specific Spyders I make it a point to get BACK UP UNITs for>> i.e. for instance my Catcherman models, original Temperance 1 ( FB-05) model (SE & PE). I don't think I'll ever get enough of the C-36 Military models in all the great blade steels you can get them in and I'm currently on the look out for a couple of the older full Spyderedged Military models.

There are 2 of the older Golden Era Spyders I'm on a search for BACK UP UNITS for and those models being the C-50 Centofante and the JD Smith models both in SE & PE. Actually I currently have more "USER Spyders" than I do collector grade SAFE QUEENS which I just recently realized.

I regard my USER SPYDERS as necessities, not at all in the luxury category even though I do consider most of my Spyders a luxury to own and use. If you find a model that you like and if you do use it then by all means you should get a BACK UP UNIT as soon as possible.
Long Live the SPYDEREDGE Spyderco Hawkbills RULE!!

Well I can't afford backups but I have replaced two knives. First tenacious I gifted to a friend. Then bought a black/black tenacious, I broke the tip off that one and gifted it to a coworker.
I've also lost a Tasman that I finally replaced.

Centofante 3
Large Lum Chinese
Goddard sprint (the white Micarta one)

This obviously excludes all my Delicas and Enduras as none of them are identical and none are still in boxes in the safe waiting for the "user" to get lost

Techno and Manix 2 CTS-XHP.

Of course I'm not counting 4 Delicas, 3 Para 2's, 3 other Manix 2's, 2 Sages, 2 Poliwogs and whole bunch of Mules, because they are not exactly same.

My EDC is an Endura3. I picked up a pair of backups off the BF exchange, one VG-10, and one ATS-55. They're true back ups, still in the original boxes.

When the Lum came out I liked it enough to get several green and blue.
Recently I picked up a blue Meerkat for Japan carry and the ergo is so good on this big little knife I bought some burgandys.

Stretch2, Native5, PM2 in different variations. These are my favorite carry Spydercos in order.

Caly 3.5 SuperBlue. I can buy ten more of these to be honest lol.

I'm plotting on a second Southard because I want one stock and another perked up a little.

The Superleaf has been my primary EDC ever since I first obtained one. When I heard the Superleaves were falling from production, I raked in as many as I could. Now the backups of my backups have backups.

I also found a few Paramilitary 2s while looking for Superleaves, and I picked them up to see what all the commotion was about. They're nice, but they're not supernice, so I decided on keeping one for a changeup.

I used to buy 2 of each i was planning to use but it was an expensive habit...
on the top of my head i know i got a spare for the blue Lum, ZDP D4 (blue or green), pink D4, D2 Milie, BG42 Milie, CFS30V Milie...
it all started with the Caly3 PBRG. i was so eager to try ZDP that i placed orders at a few places to secure at least one and ended up with 5 :D

I typically try to not own more than one of any knife unless there's a good enough difference between them to warrant it. I have had 3 Para 2s that were all different, and I currently own two Manix 2s, one is the DLC version and the other is the M4 sprint. I have two Ladybugs but one is a SE H1 hawkbill and the other is a the other is the ZDP version.
All SE all the time since 2017
