Newbie thoughts, 4 knives, obsession, next?

#1

Post by Cajun93 »

History: previously into blades. Wanted to start a knife collection.
Time tree:
Loved Spyderco's look and feel via web. But if not up to snuff, would look elsewhere......

Bought a Dragonfly salt to see if Spyderco was legit.
Shaved/Split hair from the box, LOVE IT. EDC'd, LOVED it. Size and hand grip amazing.
H1 sharpens ok, not great.....very good, long lasting "working" edge. Cannot get screaming sharp on SM.
Office workers think: cute, sharp

Next, Delica blue FRN, seemed too big, EDC'd.... So light LOVED it.
Size concern over. Not really "flick-able"
Then I sharpened it....WOW. VG10 SCREAMS when sharpened.
Wow. Great size, great steel, scares office workers.
Use around the house, hard use.
Rolled the edge three times cutting wire, sharpened up fine.

Persistence:
LOVED the heavy liners, feel. First time I felt a Spyderco "flick".
Some, opened blade play. A little heavy. NICE looking.
Good steel, got screaming sharp but lost it quick.
Cut a lime.... Left overnight .... Some superficial rust.
Like it, play and rust scares....

Dragonfly, vg10
Small, light, sharp, frn handles, LOVED IT, gifted it before I edc'd it.

Any thoughts on next couple knives?
I like light, thin, easily sharpened, easily "screaming sharp", that last a lil while. No need for D2, or zdp.

I'm thinking,
Chokwe
Manix lightweight
G10 dragonfly
Sage
Chaparral
Salt
Pacific salt

scares office workers.
Is that a bad thing? lol...

Go for the G10 Dragonfly next so I can read another post about how great they are. ;)

The G10 Dragonfly maybe the next Spyderco I order.

I'd go Sage/Chaparral or Manix2, whenever the Paramilitary market cools off try that one too. And you've got to get a Military.

I went through a very similar progression (Tenacious to Dragonfly ZDP to Delica ZDP). The 4th knife I bought was a Manix 2.

For you, I'd suggest the Manix 2 (of whichever variety) or the Paramilitary 2 as then next knife to add.

Welcome to the Forums Cajun93.

If you are thinking about a Chokwe, now the time before they are all sold out. I have one and I love it, cool design nice light weight frame lock. It is much larger than what you have though ... if that's an issue that is.

Welcome aboard and welcome to a land that you can never leave.
Guard your credit card tightly. Anytime someone asks what knife
should they get next, offers a countess supply of answers. Just go
with what you feel and what you would like to own. Even people with
huge collections have the same "what should I get next" battle.

Chaparral. Light, beautiful, gets very sharp and holds the edge very well IMO. S30V steel is one of my overall favorites. Just a bit smaller than the Delica and the CF scales give it a little class which may scare the co-workers a little less. :)

The Chokwe is $117 at Sierra Trading Post on closeout, if you get on their email list for the 35% discount coupons.

Welcome to the forums Cajun93. Based on your post and your list of suggestions I would suggest the following:

Manix 2 Lightweight (Light, Thin, Sharp and easy to maintain screaming edge, Great corrosion resistance)
G-10 Dragonfly (Light but with subtle heft, Thin, Sharp becaise you already love the VG-10, excellent corrosion resistance)

I don't own either, but my alternate suggestion would be to try the Sage (S30V is pretty awesome stuff) and/or the Chaparral (thin and possible chance to try XHP).

Looking forward to hearing your choices.

Amen to that. The brother speaks the truth. It doesn't get easier so buckle up for the rollercoaster.

Also, for Cajun and anyone else that doesn't have one yet, the Techno is a must.

What a good, informative, light and "breezy" forum. I quickly ran from blade forums after one post.
Thanks for the replies!
New Short List:
G10 dragonfly
Chaparral (already have a Signature 250 cuddy, so this may be a natural choice) :)
Manix

Quick question. I leave my Dragonfly Salt clipped to my bathing suit (that I LIVE in when not at work). I also live the cliche salt life. When off, I am in the ocean, in the lake (fresh), working in the yard sweating, or in my salt water pool. The Salt, has no trouble. Will an S30v or VG10 handle this????

How can you beat that! Worth buying for anyone that is even remotely interested in the knife.

I know that S30V and VG-10 are very corrosion resistant, but I wouldn't advise doing that with anything other than H1. I too enjoy the salt life (part time) and the H1 Dragonfly or Tasman are always clipped inside my board shorts.
