Ranger T is a great round. I like Federal HST LE 147gr.
The Ranger's and the HST's are my go to rounds for hollow points. I've switched over to Underwood XD's recently though for their consistency (never fail to expand) and bigger wound cavities.

Keeping it knife related... The Ranger's are the best for knife balancing. ;)

That is impressive, especially with all the odd lines of the Yo.

Was in the ocean off and on today, mainly to cool off. Salt 2 SE and Native Salt PE. One for each pocket of my trunks.

Started polishing it back up to a medium finish. Those with a keen eye will also see the tip is a touch thinner than it was before. My tip was in pretty poor shape so I reground it. Much better piercer now.

I love this model. I've added two more SE to my collection this summer. Might start seeing one of them rotated in soon :)

You don´t happen to have an Endura 4 anymore, have you? If yes, could you post a comparison pic of the Pacific Salt handle (= "old" Endura shape) and the Endura 4 handle? (I somehow seem to remember you already did this earlier, but I am not sure anymore...)

I don't.

Sal is going to hate me for this but I'll go over why I dislike the Endura 4 handle again.

First, this is how the Endura 3 handle looks in my hand:

Image

Image

Everything fits nicely just like this. My fingers are all properly spaced and comfortable. My thumb has space to breathe. It just works for me.

Now, let me point out something about this handle. The first finger groove is excessively big. No one has an index finger that fat. I have no idea why they make handles like this.

BUT

It's even worse on the Endura 4!

Image

They made the already oversized first finger groove even bigger! Why?!?

The only reason that comes to mind is they intend for two fingers, not one, to go there.

Thus presents a number of issues, like having half the handle sticking out the bottom of your palm being wasted, which is an odd design choice.

But if I try to put two fingers there, well, then my thumb has no where to go! It looks like this:

Image

How do people use knives like this? I don't get it.

So then I try to grip is like an Endura 3, with only my index finger in the first groove.

Well, now the cutting edge feels too far away for good control, and the knife feels too blade heavy!

Image

Neither grip feels good to me.

The Endura 3 feels perfect every time I grip it. The Endura 4 either causes intense pain in my thumb joint or feels blade heavy and cumbersome to use. There is no grip that just feels right to me.

It's a model I've given 4 tries and I just can't get it to work.

I would have a massive Endura 4 collection if they had the same handle shape. I like basically every other change to the handle. The new texture, jimping around the lock bar, and 4 way clip are all awesome. The FFG, all the sprints, I'd be all about that. But the handle shape kills it for me.

The last Endura 4 I had I gave away to a coworker. I used another Spyderco to whittle off the first point between finger grooves. The handle worked a little better for me like that. It let me put three fingers in the first enlarged finger groove and it felt comfortable, but still not as good as a stock E3 handle.

Considering every E4 variant is susceptible to rust, weighs more and has ergonomhcs issues compared to my Pacific Salt, I've moved on. Maybe the Endura 5 will have a better handle. I've long wished for them to use the Cara Cara handle on the Endura line. The Cara Cara is like an Endura 3 with a choil. I think its the best expression of the Endura style handle shape to date.

The Cara Cara 2 handle shape is perfection! Love my Endura 4, but that first hump is in an awkward place. It does seem like they were going for a two-finger groove and it works, just a little crammed for my fingers. I wear large size gloves and the handle works ok for me, but I can see how someone with even slightly larger hands could find it uncomfortable.
