Re: What Spyderco is in your pocket today??
1. Chubby, sharpened at 14.6° with a progression of diamond stones, film, and paste to 200,000 grit to a mirror. For being chubby, he is a sharp dude.
2. Black Karahawk, sharpened somewhere around 12°, again with a mixed media progression. The angle is not accurate; I set up my Wicked Edge in a weird way for sharpening small, quick hawkbills - but they come out much sharper than factory. Clay (owner / inventor of WE) showed me how he sharpens karabits. He's a big Emerson fan, and when he told me he could get the high end Emerson Karambits sharper than factory, I listened closely.
3. Szabo Folder.
I typically always have 1 & 2 with me; the Karahawk is the most useful knife for cutting open boxes, making score lines, cutting paper / lapping film, etc. Whenever a non-knife person asks me about the Karahawk, I tell them it basically replaces an X-Acto. If they question me further, with something like "Wouldn't it be cheaper to just buy the X-Acto?" I reply that the Karahawk also excels at quick, clean, internal cuts of the carotid artery.
Position 3 is my "play" position. I will carry different knives as the third knife, typically a medium to large folder like a K2, Manix XL, Tighe Stick, Matriarch, Ayoob, Gayle Bradley 1, Southard, Nirvana, Slysz Bowie, etc. This way, I have my predictable behaving standby knives that can handle 99% of tasks if something with knife 3 doesn't work out; I also have a new "bigger" knife to learn about with me.
I hope to pick up a Tuff next week.
