Funny thing is: Here in Austria, where I think most of the movie was shot, it is really not popular at all. Most people don´t know anyhing about it (I happen to do, since I was in Milwaukee for several weeks for a students exchange when I was 16, and my hosts where huge sound-of-music-fans. They could not believe that I am from Salzburg, know all the film locations but not the movie itself... :p )

I could start a knife-pic-series with all the location of "Sound of music" in the background... would actually be pretty easy to do, most are in or very close the city of Salzburg, where I live. ;)
I would love to see that thread - that movie was a favorite of mine as a kid.
Hey Julia,

next in my "Salzburg sound of music knife pic series" ;) :

Tenacious in front of Schloss (=castle/palace in English) Leopoldskron.
One time focus on the knife, one time on the castle
I think it was one of the main exterior filming locations (though the palace itself as a whole perhaps gets never shown in the movie? But just its terrace, the lake...)

Even in wikipedia (scroll down a bit) the castle gets a whole section for its role as filming location.

No wonder it's such a popular filming location - it's gorgeous! How lucky you are to live surrounded by so much beauty (both the natural beauty and the man-made)!

Landed a switch backside 180 over the hip at the skatepark so at least one activity worked out today.
