What Spyderco is in your pocket today??
Re: What Spyderco is in your pocket today??
Please don’t do that, my wallet won’t like it haha. But yeah, this design in a larger knife and as thin as it is, would also be a dream.
Great advice btw about using it. That’s the reason I also bought the FRN (I want to keep the maple one more a gents knife), just to “abuse” it and use it hard. From what I felt in the short time that I had these, it can handle way more than just being gentle. I just can’t stop talking about it :D One last thing, it’s definitely the sliciest knife I’ve ever used. I’m just stoked haha...

Man, it is hard to stop praising the Chap... It is really a little tank. Extremely solid built, and with the blade play free backlock it feels really like a fixed blade.
And yes, this thing CAN take a beating! The blade is thin, but really not THAT thin (longer Opinel blades are a lot thinner) and pretty tall, which makes it both structurally stronger, and even slicier.
The leaf shape makes for an a bit sturdier tip just by geometry which is good in a thin blade.
I always say for me my Chap is something like a little "bushcraft-claw"... feels really like an additional laser cutter finger in use, like "more" and "more natural" than just a knife.
I think an XL would be great. Keep it as sturdy but thin overall as it is for an extremely slim carry, give it that amazing backlock and you'll have a perfect general EDC folder for not TOO prolongued uses.
Generally I am of the opinion that thin, slicey blades fit better in long knives, where they can show their full potential.

I’ve got the 52100 PM 2 in the pocket right now, and that’s subject to change, of course.
Re: What Spyderco is in your pocket today??
Well, second post here today...
In the morning a run with the Chap, and now in the beginning night a hike in the woods for no spin throwing in the light of my headlamp...
I have been doing quite a bit of no spin throwing, but always only with ONE knife (mostly my Esee Laser Strike) or other objects... these cheapos are actually my first triple set, and that almost triples the fun..
and makes me want the large Spyder Throwers really badly. Maybe my next Spydie purchase and not a folder. .
Manix in my pocket. Never a wrong choice.

Re: What Spyderco is in your pocket today??
Man, the Laser Strike is GREAT for throwing!!! Pretty substantial, but just not TOO heavy weight for a throwing knife, extremely robust, especially the tip! :)
And YES, I am well aware that Esee explicitly states that their knives and 1095 are NOT meant for throwing and of course I´d never take advantage of Esees life time warranty should the knife get damaged while throwing - but I can´t imagine that this will ever happen! I´ve hit rocks multiple times, the Laser Strike did ricochet like mad, but NO severe damage at all.
And, tbh: I totally like the style and look of the Laser Strike, but I don´t really care for it as an actual cutting tool - the edge holding got a lot better after some sharpenings, but is still nothing to write home about, and though I thinned it out it still is a pretty bad cutter. BUT in return impossible to destroy! :)
In the pic below you can see how just and only the tip is stripped of all the coating already from constant throwing... :D

Re: What Spyderco is in your pocket today??
i'm surprised you've had the experience you've had with it. throwing seems to be the number one reason for returns of broken blades for them. i guess the 1095 develops micro fractures from the hard impacts and just snaps one day. i'm glad yours hasn't broken on you though. i've never used a laser strike, but i like the blade shape. that's probably why i love my avispa so much. you should check one out if you haven't. they're really cheap and pretty great for the cost.Wartstein wrote: ↑Fri Mar 19, 2021 2:20 pm

i can't let this all be about esee though... your praise of the chaparral lw really makes me want one bad. i kind of wish there was a salt version in lc200n. it would be the knife i had hoped my native salt would be, which is basically a really great plain edge edc that is actually slicey. i may have to just get one even though it's not a salt. i love my manix 2 lw in xhp.

Really?!  do you know that for sure?!
This now surprises ME: I think just by looking at my Laser Strike you can see that I really did not go easy on it at all and have thrown it a lot, several thousand times I guess, and most times with real force behind the throw. As said, I missed, hit rocks, even confunded mossy rocks with mossy tree stumps and smashed the Laser Strike "in" them, it ricochet and hit all kinds of things...nothing, just scratches, and of course some minor chips in the edge quite frequently.
But microfracturing could be a thing, we´ll see. (Sidenote: Even though Esee has a "no questions asked" warranty they still say their knives are not meant for throwing. And so though it is "technically" ok to return an Esee that broke while throwing imho it would still be NOT ok.)
/ Get yourself a Chap!!! Even if you should sell it some day, it is something to experience! First and foremost what a great foundation thin bladestock lays for superior cutting performance, how strong well made thin blades still are, and then the extremely solid build, the quality, (Taichung) fit and finish of the Chap, and last but not least the superstrong backlock (internal stop pin!) - ah, yes, and XHP is great stuff too!! :)
I am not sure a Salt version of the Chap would be easy to do though. To be a real (FRN) Chap it HAS to have liners, otherwise it could never be so thin (and strong) - and Salt knives WITH liners are a lot more complicated to make than without I guess...

For what it’s worth, I’m super happy with my small PE Salt 2 in LC200N. It has very solid lockup for a Seki and slices like the dickens. Came with a fantastic and even edge on it too. That and Chaparral are my go to’s for smaller carry.

The Salt 2 ffg (for me in SE) will be the first knife that actually will challenge the position of my Chap as running knife...
And it (the Salt) will be my knife for real light weight hikes. It is just not available yet in Europe as far as I know.

Re: What Spyderco is in your pocket today??
even if it needed liners, taichung is already making a knife in lc200n with lc200n liners.
i am already thinking about picking one of these up, but the delica handle isn't my favorite. the chap would be great though. i'd like to see the upcoming leaf hunter as a salt as well.MFlovejp wrote: For what it’s worth, I’m super happy with my small PE Salt 2 in LC200N. Re: What Spyderco is in your pocket today??
Cut a few zipties and some cardboard boxes today. With the zipties, I was glad to have such a stout blade. With the cardboard, I was a bit underwhelmed.
The AAP sat dutifully in my pocket, like a good piece of pocket jewelry.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.
