What Spyderco is in your pocket today??
Re: What Spyderco is in your pocket today??
The mail carrier brought me a new pair of scales. I oiled them up, eased some rough bits and fuzzy edges (needs a little more still) installed them and went for a walk in my local woods.
These do not feel as luxurious as the Spyderco factory micarta, as on my CruCarta Shaman, but i'm still thinking it is an upgrade from the stock FRN. I'm hoping they break in nicely, as i recall these other micarta handles needing some aging.

Cool! :)
Though i personally have never been really into active pickups... and so my favorite is still Seymour Duncans ultra classic Rock combination '59 (SH1) neck and JB (SH4) bridge..in a decent mahagony / flamed maple top axe... :)

Yes, some of my free weights. I've been accumulating over the past 15 years or so, I've got a pretty decent set up at home, to where I don't feel the need to have a gym membership. I'm a pretty routine person, so I'm good for 3-4 (1) hour long strength training nights per week. Having my knives in the same room helps motivate me more haha!
NOT the biggest Manix lover?! So you basically were a totally different person back then! :pThe Meat man wrote: ↑Mon Feb 22, 2021 6:28 pmCool! Still waiting for that strength-training/workout OT thread Rick. :p
/ I do just a little strength training too, but primarily only in times I don´t get to climb and especially bouldering enough (bouldering, especially in a climbing gym with a lot of heavy overhanging walls can be a not too bad strength training, especially for the back and the core)
But the goals in strength training for climbing in a way are kind of "anti-bodybuilding" :p - one wants to get as strong as possible, while still gain the least amount of muscle mass possible. So one wants to be strongrelative to their body weight, but not absolutely seen (so as lightweight but still as strong as possible).
World class climbers do look strong when in action, but of course never "big" and "massive".
So I´d be interested in that workout-thread too, though it would be probably of limited usefulness to me.
One little tip from a climber though: I highly recommend using fat gripz (https://www.fatgripz.com/) and even more so grip4orce (https://www.ironcompany.com/gripforce-t ... -grip4orce) when dumbell- training (see pic on two of my dumbells)! Both make it a lot harder to hold the bars of the dumbells, which develops finger strength = forearm muscles (obviously a good thing when is a climber).
But additionally it challenges the other arm muscles too in a new way. At first one might even find that they can do fewer repetitions of a certain exercise when using those devices than without them.
I´d get the regular flex grip4orce (so not stiff) for dumbells, and the regular (medium) fatgripz for pull up bars.
Also nice: Aliens outdoor forearm trainers (https://www.aliens-outdoor.com/unterarm ... p-pro.html)

Re: What Spyderco is in your pocket today??
Weightlifting is cool, and climbing is a lot of fun, but this is my favorite way to get a workout :)
Tonight I was alternating between 5 minute "rounds" on the heavy bag, then hitting incline bench.
Kickboxing is such a fun workout. Trains speed, strength and cardio all at once, very efficiently. Of course, knowing how to strike proficiently has its own benefits

Re: What Spyderco is in your pocket today??
This beauty showed up last night! Looks even better in person! Though I really like these unique and flashy handles...to not draw attention to myself at work, I'm going to swap them to some black scales that Larry was also so very nice to include, as well as two sheaths!
I'll likely do a write up in another thread when I have the time, quite a bit going on at work today, but just wanted to post up this gem that I'm extremely grateful for and excited to put to use!

I was lucky enough to win this from Larry's Mule give away that was going on at the beginning of the month! It's the #26, PMA11.JuPaul wrote: ↑Tue Feb 23, 2021 10:39 amWow! I was carrying my Advocate yesterday, today maybe a Para 3.
Re: What Spyderco is in your pocket today??
The serrations are pretty aggressive but I figure they will calm down a bit after use and resharpening. The longer plain edge part is something I really dig on the millie. Its long enough to be useful if a plain edge is needed, but not too long to take away the functionality of the full SE. Also, its easy to sharpen. I dont know about you but I have **** trying to resharpen the tiny plain edge part of a SE endura or pac salt. And while I do love the linerlock on the Millie, Im pretty excited for a comp lock version. And Sal did state that they would be producing both lock types at the same time so its a win win. The millie is such a great knife, I would call it as close to perfect as it gets for me.Wartstein wrote: ↑Mon Feb 22, 2021 1:59 am
+ 1 on the highlighted part! Though definitely not the ONLY SE Spydie I want.. :D
That Millie is actually going a bit in the "combo-edge-direction" with that pretty long PE part in the edge. I guess I´d like that!
Not so much though the "old style" deeper, more aggressive kind of serrations. But that is something one could always round off a bit.
And I always like to see that large, comfy cutout for the great linerlock. Easy to see why this is so good in outdoor use, with gloves and cold, wet fingers. And why I am SOOO glad that Sal said the classic linerlock Millie will remain in the lineup, even if there should come a comp.lock Millie 2! :)
Re: What Spyderco is in your pocket today??
Once I had the Mule in hand, I was actually surprised that it wasn't very big! As you can see here, it's similar in size to my two favorite models the Manix and Shaman. The blade stock thickness seems to be pretty similar to the Manix, but with quite bit more cutting edge. Larry left a pretty toothy, yet sharp edge on it, so I'm going to roll with it as is. Though it does seem to catch and cut slightly in the sheath when putting it in or retracting it, no visible damage to the edge though.
