I think Spydies in general scare sheeple. The classic jigged-bone handled "grandpa" knives, even with blades in the 4" range, do not seem to "frighten the horses" at all. Well, come to think of it, most people think Ladybugs and Jesters are cute, even if they are not traditional. My Kiwi is a great sheeple knife, being cute and having jiggged bone, traditional handle scales. VW, you may want to be careful up there. Your school may decide to ban knives altogether, regardless of the law. I believe in standing up for your rights, in principle, but one does have to obey the "house rules" when visiting them. Samurai checked their swords at the door when visiting, as a sign of respect.

By the way, my EDC is a Gunting, usually backed up by a Civilian. I keep other sheeple-friendly knives handy, though, for utility.

RE: CalypsoKid
I don't like the term sheeple. It implies that you know more than they do and that they are easily led. I would imagine that I could pull out any kind of knife anywhere and no-one would raise an eyebrow. I *never* get odd looks when I do. I think this is becuase I am 51 years old and dress and act respectibly. People know they can trust me by my demeanor. OTOH, if I were young and dressed in the latest style, people might react when I pulled the blade out of the scabbord. IMO, its not the knife but the person. People go by first impressions and even though they might be wrong (Ted Bundy, Jeff Dahmer), this is all they can do.

That's interesting, since my standard work dress is shirt and tie. I don't pull my knives out for effect, and yet I still get negative reactions to them.

My native CE caused some comments when I handed it to someone who needed a knife. Ironically, the gentleman I handed it to grew up in an era when all boys carried a pocket knife to school. He still couldn't believe how big the native was (!!??).

I don't know where you're located CalypsoKid, but I've lived in a variety of places and noticed distinct differences in local attitudes towards knives. In rural PA, I saw a few men with folding knives on a belt sheath. In the city in OH, I was a real oddity with the spyder clip hanging out of my pocket. In AZ, at least 50% of the male population carries some sort of pocket knife. Many carry ones with clips. Of course in AZ, it's not illegal to carry a gun openly (or all that uncommon), or to conceal a pocket knife.

What I want to know is when did things get so violent? My parents gave me my first pocket knife when I was 10 years old. It was a Swiss Army knockoff. Still, I carried a pocket knife to school ever since the 5th grade. We NEVER had any kind of a problem. Now kids can get expelled for it. It baffles me.

CalypsoKid: Regardless of how I'm dressed, be it a suit and tie or all blacked out in street clothes I still get "those" looks from people when I pull out one of my spyderco's to cut something.

A co-worker was visibly upset when I broke down some boxes with my Endura. He made a comment about it being illegal and that I shouldn't be using a knife that large. To be considerate of his feelings, I started using my Delica at work. He started giving me a wide berth and tried to get my other co-workers to report me to my supervisor. When I heard this, I started using my Co-pilot at work. He didn't like it either. He has since quit, thankfully. No one else had an issue with my Spydies. One co-worker actually bought a Delica and loves it!!! He told me that it wasn't the size of the knives that had bothered this guy. It was the Spydie hole!! Go figure.....

How did the Hole freak out a co-worker? Still figuring that one out...

I've carried regularly since I was 11, except for elementary/High school. I've never had a problem, even though I always carry at Uni.

Never underestimate the impossible.

I've carried regularly since I was 5...

everyday in elementary(although they asked me to leave them at home, the whole 1/2 block away)... and everyday in HS as well... figured out IWB carry in grade 11 when I bought my cricket, carried the delica clipped in grade 10, till the easter fun, then just dropped in pocket till spring 01 when I bought the cricket.

*Our greatest triumph comes not from NOT falling down, but from getting back up every time.*

He thought the Spydie hole's purpose was like a blood groove. That is, to allow blood to drain faster...Many different people in the warehouse carried knives including Spydies, Gerbers, SOGs and box cutters. He only had issues with people who carried Spydies. He was a know-it-all and no one could tell him differently. He quit to become a golf instructor.

It must have a lot to do with your location. I mostly carry a native and use it in public all the time. I have never had anyone react strangely to it. Most of my coworkers like to see my <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>, especially when I get a new one, although most of them don't carry. I'm popular when someone needs something cut.
