Another Southard Mod

Love this knife.
1. Changing scales are pretty easy. The factory one is grippy, but close to square at the corners. To make it more comfy, I contoured the G10 and course sandblast. Not beautiful, but frendly to an old hand.
2. Changed the clip! A titanium clip is easy to flex, easy to make, easy to match the existing framelock finish(blast and tumble).
3. removed the lanyard tube. An open design is supposed to be simple and well, "open", the tube is just another item in there. The tube is not necessary for strength with three standoffs with lock-in's. I don't use lanyards.
4. No, leave the G10 lug stop, it's pretty. :D

Yes, I didn't keep the arc at the blade's hole, since I can't open it with the hole anyway. Looks less busy this way.

Did a better job of matching the handle's contour than factory clip.

Nice job! I really like the soft contours of the handle. It looks nice and comfy like pillow.

Did you make a new clip from scratch or just modify the stock clip? If you did make a brand new clip then where do you get your stock?

Beautiful work, gull wing! I think the knife looks more aesthetically pleasing with the rounded grip contours and abbreviated Spyderhole cutout.

Looks much better now. Well done. I'm getting bored of plain peel ply G-10.

Very nice! I really like it!

The Southard's clip is the only thing I'd change about mine and I'd do what you did. It looks great.

Great job! the clip is also a thing I would like to change; in Ti but then a folded over one for deep carry. Indeed making scales for this wonderful Spydies is easy......

gull wing (or any body in the know),

In regards to making a clip, does Ti bend easily, hold its shape (memory), and is there any heat treat done? Basically I'm asking is this something I could do with a scroll saw, pliers, and a Dremel, or do I need more specialized tools.

thanks,

James

Ti:
No heat treat.
It bends and holds it's shape, Ti has a memory. You can "cold bend" ti easily. Thinner the better, I use .032". Yes you CAN BREAK it.
Tools - Drill press and PROPER bit sizes. Hacksaw to cut(it gets hot very fast and will destroy anything that is meant for wood).
Some sort of GRINDER.
I use 1/4" thick aluminum plates/blocks as guides to bend around. There are a number of ways to bend Ti.
You can also use heat.
A little practice, you will turn clips out like a pro.

Good Luck!

Great work, congratulations and thanks for sharing.
