The edge angle is the "wider" of the two angles. There will be a greater distance from the top of one rod to the top of the other. The other angle is for thinning the edge down after you work your way by sharpening many times into thicker steel.

View the Video/DVD at least 2 to 3 times
I recommend to everyone who first gets a Spyderco 204 Sharpmaker to view the video/DVD at least 2 to 3 times before attempting to use it. And do it when you can give your undivided attention.
Also the booklet that comes with the 204 Sharpmaker ( I assume the book is still included in the Sharpmaker kit)>> has a wellspring of great information and great tips on using it.
The 204 Sharpmaker of Spyderco's is truly an indispensible sharpening tool in my vast footlocker of sharpening equipment.
But it's like one of my old school teachers used to tell me >> "If Nothing Else Works, Then Try Following Directions" And that video will give you excellent insight on getting started using it.
The only critique I have on the Sharpmaker is that I wish they would make more grits available>> particularly to have one very coarse and aggressive stone for reprofiling. I also wish that they would make available some other grits as well.
But do check out the instructions and the video/DVD and you will get the hang of it quickly.

40° for both knives would work great, IMHO.

Nice to have you around kromo. I use the 40 on most knives myselfkromo wrote:tks to all. you are very kind.

nice to be in this great forum.
with the Sharpmaker. It takes a little time to get a system down.
I have taken hours to get a older knife sharp and then I have only
taken a couple minutes and a few passes to touch one up.
Using the exact same motions and a bit of patience is the key to me.
