Civilian saves whale

#1

Post by Spydie-50 »

While watching our local news tonight there was a video of a whale rescue. To my surprise the rescue team used, what looked like to me a spyderco civilian, attached to a long pole. They were able to free the whale from rope entangled around its tail. It would of been cool to see the whale rescue blade in action but seeing this modified spyderco in action was just as cool.
The video can be seen on our local stations web site http://www.khon2.com

Definitely not a Whale Rescue Blade.

Got to agree, looks like a modified Civilian.

Great story and it is great for all knife lovers, collectors, and users. It is a small step to show again and again that our edged tools are used for good many many more times than for violence.

Coming soon: Civilian/Cetacean sprint run in H1 and yellow G10.

So ... the Dolphin Rescue Blade should be a flipper, right?

Wait, I thought S30V turned to dust if exposed to salt water!?

LOL. Looked more like a Matriarch blade to me.

The blade in use is actually an Endura. I work with NOAA and spoke with my contact there today to verify this information. They dismantle the knife and then weld the blade to a threaded post for attachment to the pole. They also weld a bead at the tip to prevent injury to the animals. In this configuration it's known as a "Fly Knife" which is what they use when the whale is still moving at a high speed. They also use our Pacific Salt, Atlantic Salt and the Whale Rescue Blade and they personally carry one of our knives in case they need to disentangle themselves. These rescues are truly amazing and we are very proud and grateful to be a small part of making a difference.

Thanks for sharing the link!

That's pretty cool, how do they do the welding without damaging the heat treat? Or is it just not that important for this task?
