Vacation knife?
Vacation knife?
Hey guys,
Heading to Florida tomorrow for a week and I can't decide which knife to bring. I'll be near the ocean but won't be spending a ton of time in the water. I only want to bring one knife. Here are my options:
Sage 2
Harpy SS
Dragonfly II Salt
Manix 2
Manix 2 Lightweight
PM2
Pacific Salt SE
Endura ZDP-189
Delica
Kershaw Skyline
Byrd Hawkbill
Byrd Cara Cara 2
Thanks!

I was taking Caly3 for my last Florida vacation. We spent few hours daily on the beach and there were no problem with VG10. So any H1 or VG10 knife should be fine. IIRC ZDP-189 corrosion resistance is not as good as VG10. I am not sure about S30V.

Dragonfly Salt or the Delica. The D'fly will probably be more convenient more of the time, Delica if you feel like you would ever have to defend yourself in an emergency.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.
Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

My Salt I is my vacation knife. So based on your options, I'd choose either the Delica or Dragonfly II Salt. In Florida, especially if going to the beach, I'd choose the Dragonfly. Being smaller, it is less likely to get noticed by Non-Knife People and finally, if it is confiscated at the airport or stolen from your luggage, it is the cheapest to replace.
Have fun on vacation, and let us know what you decide.

You don't really say what you anticipate using it for so that makes a recommendation difficult.
What I'M taking to OBX in a couple months is a Pac Salt PE. I know people love SEs and Salt SEs rock, but I find a PE more generally useful for what I do.
In your case, barring additional info, I'd say DF Salt.

Yellow Saver Salt and a Leatherman Juice cs4 is what I always take to that part of the world. The Saver Salt is light weight and a bright color which looks both friendly and is easy to find if I drop it, does great in the ocean (and that climate) and you don't feel it in your pocket. The leatherman has lots of handy things including a corkscrew and its small enough to not be a burden to carry.
Heresy! Ban him! :D :) I didn't even know it was possible to only wear one knife at a time! :)bt148 wrote: I only want to bring one knife.
I didn't see a Salt I in your list, so view this as an opportunity to purchase another wonderful blade that is between the Dragonfly and Pacific Salt in size.
The Dragonfly Salt is just so darn handy and easy to carry, I'd be hard pressed to leave that one at home. Unless you are doing food prep / cutting watermelons and *need* a longer blade, it should handle anything you throw at it -- maybe take along a Double Stuff sharpening stone for touch-up.
Which Knife, A or B? get Both! (and C, D and E) :)
