Best EDC for 6 Month Deployment

#1

Post by vaisforlovers »

Hello everyone,

Hypothetically, should someone deploy to Afghanistan for 6 months, what Spyderco knife (knives) should they have with them? (Its not me, really).

The PM2 is the obvious choice. Would M390 Steel be too much of a PITA to sharpen/keep sharp? (Asking since the Bento Smurf PM2 is one of the few I can find right now)

Any upsides our downsides to the Southard Flipper over the PM2?

Any other suggestions? Looking for a good knife, but don't wanna be scared to beat it up if needed.

Hypothetically I've got about a week to purchase to make sure it gets delivered in time.

Thanks in advance

James

Kinda depends on what sharpening gear you're taking with you. Full Sharpmaker set with diamonds M390 shouldn't be a problem. I might rather take a CPM M4 Manix2 but that's just a preference.

Stay safe!

I vote for a Pacific Salt and a small crow bar.
That or one of the Enuffs.

I thought about that but I'm not sure Afganistan needs H1. And I so love M4! ;)

I would vote for a regular Military. S30V should work fine and it's purpose-designed for the tasks that a soldier should encounter. Lastly, you should be able to get quickly if needed.

Ken

Think of all the sweat a soldier can produce wearing full gear with the temperature at 40 degrees.

i personally love M390 but i think a Szabo would be your best bet it's a much more stout folder and i find it pretty good for utility purposes as well not to mention you get alot more knife for about the same price.

A standard plain edge S30V Millie and a (mine was ZDP-189) full serrated endura served me very well. If only one knife is wanted, perhaps a combo edge endura.

Military. Someone came to Sal and asked him "If you were to send your son off to the services, what knife would you like him carrying?" and he came up with the military design.

As a civilian contractor for the Pentagon, I was deployed for 6 months to Iraq which was considered paradise compared to Afghanistan, (made 4x the money I would in the states) and I took my Leatherman Charge TTi Multitool, and my Paramilitary 2 Black blade camo

Perfect combo never left my side.

Fully serrated Endura and a SAK with Alox scales.

At the time I remember making a list of all the equipment my armored car troop destroyed in 5 months on the Namibian / Angolan border in the mid 80s. The list has disappeared but I do remember that it was substantial ... based on that recollection of how rough we were on our gear, I have my doubts that the pointy tip on a Military would have survived my deployment. Hence I have never bought a Military, I use my Para 2 very infrequently and am suggesting an Endura in this instance. YMMV

PE Endura or a Manix2 in any steel it's been released in. Both are relativly light-weight, inexpensive, durable, and have strong tips. That said, anyone who's ever been depolyed, anywhere, knows that a good folder only compliments a good fixed-blade. So, unless your 'buddy' plans on spending all his/her time in a FOB, the 1st priority should be determining which fixed-blade to take. RLTW.

Sage II - it's simple, foolproof, tough, compact, has decent steel, and is easy to find.
