I declare ZDP the best blade steel for cutting gift wrapping paper

#1

Post by tonydahose »

I just spent about 4 hours wrapping all of the gifts that we bought. I tried VG10, S30V and ZDP. It wasnt that many variables in steel but ZDP came out the winner. It was in CF Caly 3". It is much more enjoyable using a :spyder: than scissors IMO. I will be bringing this knife to all the parties as well, it is classy and cuts like a laser :D .

I used BD1, and it did a fantastic job. I think it takes an incredibly keen edge, but looses it quickly. With wrapping paper you don't need a whole lot of edge retention though.

I still have a few to wrap, I'll try some other options.

Next test is the best for opening those bloody plastic clam packs that kids toys come in.

I'm out of town and didn't want to check an expensive knife in my luggage, so I only brought my Pingo in N690Co. Somehow I think it's more than up to the task of cutting anything the Christmas wrapping paper may throw at it. If not, my brother-in-law has a CE Tenacious, my sister a purple Delica, and my mother a pink Squeak (all gifted by me on other occasions), so I think we're pretty well covered. :D

ZDP is really neat stuff :D It seems the be a precursor to many of the high carbon powdered metal "steels" becoming available now. Spyderco seems to be one of the only producers that consistently use it ;)

Used my Air for 6 hours of wrapping, including a dozen of those things (stocking stuffers for the grandkids) Really worked great. I've used ZDP in the past and I really think the Air did a better job. It'll be with me tomorrow as well.

Cricket - not sure what steel, but that's where the Cricket shines.

Cruwear is the best, but I don't have any yet.

I've used H1 (Dragonfly), ZDP (Dragonfly), and S30V (UKPK) in the past and for some reason, they all seem to lose the push cutting fairly quick.

I wanted to try a coarser edge and try using slicing cuts, it will probably make a pretty big difference.

Super blue is my second favorite (of what I've tried). It takes a screaming edge but doesn't hold it nearly as long as M4, in my experience.

I second this motion! Cricket is the best thing I've ever found for blister packs. Just pierce with the tip and pull. Cut 3 sides and fold back on the fourth.

I've been happy with a number of steels for Christmas duty, but will probably go with my standard M4 Military. I might add a SS Kiwi to the mix for little stuff and my Cricket is always holding my spare keys, ready to tear into blister packs.

Merry Christmas to all and to all, a good knife!

I am going to have to go with CPMS30V. Not because I did any sophisticated test like Tony, but just because I had my UKPK in my pocket when I started wrapping...when is it not more fun to use a Spyderco instead scissors!!

Use the blade with the lowes edge angle. With a sharp edge they (all Spydercos) will get the toys out so the kid will get to play with it as soon as possible. Those packs are a great test for sharpness and edge angle on EDC knives I believe. They have proven to be difficult to get into. :)
