Why carry so many knives???

Post by Kaizer »

Hello People,

Firstly I had been off the forum and indeed off a lot of things for around 4 days. I missed this forum more than missing anything else. You guys are GREAT.

OK now back to thread topic.

browsing through these threads i see a lot of you carry more than one knife. Now excuse my ignorance but why do you carry more than one knife on your person? If you could briefly explain to me i'd much appreciate it.

I carry only my copilot wherever i go. of course, i dont have more <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> (apart from the ladybug whife wife uses <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> ) but i do have other old folders. Still i dont carry all of them distributed in various pockets of my trousers.

My EDC is always been the C09 SS Copilot in plain edge. When the rookie arrive i'll swing that into EDC.

Thanks in advacne.

Have a nice day y'all.

Speaking for myself, I like to keep one knife for utility purposes (routine cutting) and another for emergency-use. This second blade is kept factory-sharp, while my "user" gets dulled-up from use (sure I touch it up, but not till the end of the day).

Kaizer,

Each knife has a different purpose. THe Endura, or Ti Lum Tanto, are for general cutting. The necklace is for looks and hay string cutting, if necessary. The Cricket is for opening packages. The SpydeRench is a mini tool kit, and the jester is just because. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Indeed. Recently, I've been changing up my EDC in no particular order. But I do carry more than one knife most of the time.

In general, I always have either my dragonfly or my BM555 around for daily use. I use these and just about only these. And by habit I frequently spin/flip around my dragonfly because I'm still a kid and kids like toys.

And then I carry a fixed blade or nonPC use. It is usually a strider SA, but I've got a CRKT stiff kiss and a ryan plan B coming to me which will replace it in FB EDC.
Now that I'm unemployed and a student and poor, I realize that packing a 260.00 blade is not the economical thing to do.

I know, I know, Ann Arbor is a real safe place to be. But I'm still real paranoid about that sort of thing..

Having used a knife in an emergency, and seen it happen with others, I just feel that there is no such thing as "too many" knives. Usually, I carry two, sometimes only one, and defense is not the main factor. In my Jeep, I always have the factory jack, but if going off-road, I carry a large "hi-lift" jack. I always carry one box of tools, but if going far from home, carry another tool box with more specialized tools. BTW, an old beat-up Spyderco Military always resides in the console, and I don't consider it a "carry" knife. Having only one knife is akin to having only the four wheels on a vehicle, and no spare. Besides, it's nice to have a "beater" knife to lend to the ever-present person who wants to borrow a knife, and who often manages to cause minor damage. I hope this rambling reply was helpful.

Hi Kaizer,
I carry one for daily use (string, letters, small cuttingtasks..etc.)Then I carry one for the big stuff around the house and with the horses. And then my work sometimes put me in situations where I feel safer with a MBC-blade for the "hopefully-nerver-happening-situation"
So sometimes I carry 3 or even more knives,
but 2 is a must to make me feel hole!

Kaizer,

You will be faced with rationaliizing the carrying more than one knife in a matter of days. I will reserve the right to offer suggestion after the Rookie roosts in Bangalore!!

Stay safe! Stay sharp! <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Work aside, that's a special set of circomstances, I always have my Ladybug with me as it's always on my keyring, other than that I carry a medium sized PE knife. If I'm going somewhere public I might put the Cricket in my pocket (for the times that decretion is needed). If I'm going to carry a SE knife, I'll also a PE as well (much more versitile).

So I'll always have two knives with me, and as many as four, depending on circomstances.

Walk softly, carry a big stick.

I think Rico said it all - and in just three words <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="tongue.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

I typically go solo, just because I really don't need more in a Uni environment. Work, however, is another story.

There's always an old Buck 450 on my belt for tough work, since it takes everything I throw at it and asks for more. In pocket would be any of a range of blades, often as not a <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>. That is for the simple coolness factor. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Sometimes, the <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> is replaced by another knife if I have one I want to work on.

Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

I started carrying 2 Delica's along time ago after reading about Eric Remmen's LPD(Life Preservation Device) classes in a "Full Contact" magazine. It made sense to me to have a left and right side knife in case one arm is trapped. And now I carry more cause I can. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

A more direct answer to why more than one knife is easy.

Every tool has a distinct purpose. So it is with knives. No
one blade can do everyting well and different blade shapes
do more work easier. If you make a practice of carrying
more than one knife you will soon learn that the blade shapes
had better be task specific. Here's an example.....

A large stockman with it's three different blade shapes paired
with a 3>4" locking knife with a general purpose blade ,
99.9% of daily cutting can be resolved with this pair.

Blades - That is one I had not thought about. I used to only carry one knife - I mean, why would you need more. Then after a month of being a forum member I realized the usefulness of having both a PE and SE availiable. Even so, I would probably often as not carry only one. After your post, I completely reconsidered the rational for left and right carry.

Sometimes the lightbulb just goes ON!!!

Rico said it before I could. It is one of the few pleasures that is till allowed us citizens by the government. Although, we are having our rights limited in an attempt to keep us safe post 9-11.

It is great to be able to carry and use those things that we collect. Couldn't imagine collecting Barbie dolls. What would we do with them during the day. Couldn't use them to open boxes, mail or ward off attackers. Pez containers are great if that is your gig but how much fun would that be. Besides we aren't suppose to eat too much candy. Just ask the government, they will tell you so.

I tend to carry a <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> PE and SE on my person everyday for any situation that may arise. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Being a truck driver, I occasionally have to cut rubber hoses, flaps, etc., thus the need for the SpyderEdge blade and the PlainEdge is for general utility, food prep, or self-defense if needed.

I currently carry my Military PE and Endura SE (soon to be replaced by a Blue Rescue) for these reasons. I also carry my Spydercard 50/50 in wallet, and Jester SE on keychain. I think that you could say that I'm ready for anything. <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Survive, Adapt, and Overcome...
