Calypso Jnr Heavyweight.

#1

Post by yog »

I would have to say that outside of work the Calypso Jnr Lwt is my altime favourite carry. In an ideal world I would probably prefer something a little longer, but living in a country where the govenment adopts reactionary polices to short term media circus's and has found it easier to clamp down on the more law abiding section a society (oops, slipped into rant mode there ), the Calypso Jnr is just about the right size and un-intimidating shape.

Now I know that the Calypso Jnr Lwt wasn't a good seller, personally I would face people to buy them until the admitted how good they were (oops, almost two rants in one post), but could it because people saw them as too much of a price point knife rather than the excellent cutting tools they are ?

We've had the Calypso Jnr, the Calypso Jnr II and the Calypso Jnr Lwt, how about Spyderco trying the Calypso Jnr Heavyweight (Hwt) ?

The blade would be identical (why mess with purfection ?), the handle would be the same shape but in plain black G-10 of similar construction to the G-10 Native, i.e. lockback with solid steel spacer at the back.

I think we would end up with a slimmer but heftier fealing knife to the Lwt model, and it would also feal more like a quality knife in the hand.

Anyone interested ?

I'd love one - but then doesn't the Salsa now fill that role? Flat ground, short blade.

I'd love a G10 Salsa in VG10

The salsa is nice - I have the Ti version, but I like the Calypso Jr. more as a working knife. If there was one with G10 or Carbon Fiber scales it would definitly become one of my primary EDC knives.

Oh, dang, I can see it is time to visit the SATC for a reality check

yog,

I recently got a Calypso Jr. lightweight, and about the only thing I can identify that I don't like about it is that it feels just a little too thick through the handle. It's a wonderfully performing knife, and very handsome but I really noticed this, at least compared to a few other of my smaller Spyderco knives including the micarta Calypso Jr.

So, I would love to see a G-10 Calypso Jr. if it were to be a bit slimmer, and I too would appreciate more heft. Added weight would only make me like it more. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever handled a Calypso Jr. in S/S...I wonder if this would fill the niche we're talking about. I don't think that they were produced with VG-10 blades though, were they?

5 minutes later...I just went and compared the micarta Calypso Jr. to it's FRN brother and they are virtually the same thickness, with the FRN model being very slightly thicker. This really surprised me, and I perceived it to be substantially thicker.

I know what you mean Jeff. After about 2 weeks of constant use after first getting it, I didn't carry it for months, I had such a hang up on the handle feal and it's "bulkiness". But after giving it a second try I finally realised what a great knife it really is.

I have to say that on initial inspection the handle on the Calypso Jnr Lwt feals the bulkiest and at the same time the flimsiest of all the FRN handled knives I own. It is only with use that I came to trust the handle for strength an realised it wasn't so bulky (yep I too was surprised at it not actually really being that bulky), hence my sugestion of re-launching it with a different handle material as a slightly more up market knife.

The Cool - A G-10 Salsa in VG-10 ?, Ok, I'll trump you with a Titainum Calypso Jnr in VG-10

yog,

Yes, this was much the same experience I had. But you're right, it's a fabulous design and I respect it greatly.

"Titanium Calypso Jnr in VG-10"

Yep, Yog, you've got me there. Sign me up for one!

However isn't the Ti Salsa more than halfway there already?

Sub 3 inch blade, Ti handles, full flat grind...plus ATS34 (not to shabby lol), Xtra large hole, Cobra hood, intergral compression lock, funky wire clip...

What more could you ask for? Go on, get a Ti Salsa, you know you want to...lol

Hey The Cool, no need to put the big sell on me, I have one on the way

It took me a while to order one, still not sold on the cobra hood, but we'll see. Maybe a bit longer and a better steel. It's so close to being a top premier knife it seems a shame not to go all the way.

And why not a Ti Calypso Jr to keep the Ti Salsa company? What a pair they would make.

Ok The Cool, you win. I've been carrying the Ti Salsa all week, and all I can say is that it is a truly excellent knife. It's so good I'm even warming to the Cobra hood

I sure like our micarta model, it gets rotated into my EDC every once in a while. It's taken over a yrear to break the action in, it's smooothe now though! This is the only knife in that size I carry as my primary! RKBA!

A titanium scaled Calypso Jr. in VG-10? Screwed together with ultra high grade hex bolts. A light texture pressed, rolled, drilled, or milled into the scales. Or S-30V?? I'm dying!!! The last EDC folding knife design ever needed from now till the end of time!
