FMA book recommendations?

#1

Post by Sirius »

Many who post here have an FMA background - including a little bit myself. I have been forunate to have read Mike Janich's book as well as some of Bram's work in progress. What book(s) do people recommend on FMA? Bladecraft or otherwise.

Dear Sirius:

My favorite FMA book is Dan Inosanto's original "Filipino Martial Arts." It went out of print a few years ago and copies that originally sold for $10.00 are now going for $150.00 through used book services like www.bibliofind.com. It's a classic and, in my opinion, still worth the price.

More recently, Tuttle has released a series of FMA books, including Mark Wiley's "Filipino Martial Culture" and "Filipino Martial Arts: Cabales Serrada Eskrima" (now available in a revised edition as "Secrets of Cabales Serrada Escrima&quot<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>, Antonio Somera's "The Secrets of Giron Arnis Escrima," and Rey Galang's "Complete Sinawali." Although somewhat controversial, I like Wiley's books a lot and regard "Filipino Martial Culture" as a classic. It also contains an extremely extensive bibliography of other FMA books and articles.

Ohara Publications also still offers "Modern Arnis" by the late Grandmaster Remy Presas --a must-have book for any FMA library.

Paladin Press recently released Amante Marinas' "Pananandata" book, which covers many different weapon types. Paladin also offers some of Marinas' earlier books, while others that are now out of print can be found used.

You'll also want to hunt around for past specials from CFW Enterprises (the Inside Kung Fu people), as they have done a number of FMA and Southeast Asian special magazines over the years.

I'm sure there's more, but that should be a good start. Happy reading...

Stay safe,

Modern Arnis by Remy Presas. Very basic introduction to stick and empty hand. Available through BN or likewise.

Hi All. Unfortunately, the Inosanto book is out of print and hard to find. Is a good introduction to FMA. When Bram's book comes out, you should purchase it. I have read the advance copy of it and it is well written and very informative.

I have written two books on Modern Arnis myself. The first one is "DeFanging The Snake: A Guide To Stick Disarms" and it covers all the basics of Modern Arnis as well as being a comprehensive study of disarming your opponent.

The second one is "Advanced Modern Arnis: A Road To Mastery" and covers the principles underlying the skills of Modern Arnis. It has many techniques and drills illustrated in it. They are both out in CD ROM form adn the latter is also available in hard copy as well.

If you check out my website, www.danandersonkarate.com you can find out how to obtain them.

Yours,
Prof. Dan Anderson
