Lanyards?

#1

Post by mac_heath »

Who here uses lanyards on their knives and how? I'm interested in:

1. what kind of knife

2. what you use the knife for

3. where you keep it on your person

4. lanyard length

5. how you use the lanyard

6. and whether the lanyard is just a loop or multi-knotted.

If you have pics, even better!

Thanks

If I carry my ladybug... light/small chores

reeve-style lanyard, finished length 2"
just drop into left/front
the lanyard is great for extending the handle on this small little guy.

Howdy mac! Welcome to <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>Land! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

I have a lanyard on my Ladybug only, but the lanyard's a bit different than most.

I passed several strands of nylon twine through the lanyard hole, then twisted and laid them to form a 2" section of 1/8" nylon twisted rope. It looks a little different, and can't come loose.

Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

I use a lanyard, which I guess is more correctly a "fob" on a number of my knives. I have them tied out of para-cord or, my preferred material, rawhide. Attached is a picture of the Reeve coil knot tied using a rawhide boot lace. I have the same type of knot on my Titanium Lum Tanto Folder and engraved Delica II. I'll be adding one to the new engraved Native II coming from Glasshartt soon. The rawhide fob looks good with the SS or Ti handles.

The fob makes it easier to get a good grip on the handle and makes removal from the pocket a cinch.

Just watch out for lanyards snagging on brush and relieving you of your knife, especially the loop type! Of course brush can also grab the clip. That happened to my Mariner I owned back in the 80's. Now I use the Snap-it around the water.

I've only had a lanyard (or in my case a fob http://www.chrisreeve.com/righthandcoilknot.jpg) on Mouse when I had it. The main benifit was that when carrying it in my jeans watch pocket, the fob made it easier to fish out.

If I was on a boat out over water on the other hand I would most certainly want a loop type lanyard on my knives.

Any knife i intend to use on the boat or up high at all gets a lanyard, i saw a type on a custom knife that i really like and its simple to make, 12 inches of rawhide boot laces passed thru the lanyard hole then a sliding barrel( i like 1/4 inch brass tubing approx1/4 long) sized to fit over the 2 ends. then the ends are knotted. When you're not using it around the wrist the barrel can be cinched up tight aginst the lanyard hole allowing you to use it as a fob. If i've lost you trying to explain this i'll take you a pic. Ron

i use a lanyard on my leatherman wave when im wearing jeans. im a small kid with big hands so my hands dont fit in pockets well. so i have a lanyard for quick pulls. my lanyard is just long enough to extend out of my pocket. i use the chris reeve coil knot and it works fine (just dont use more than thirteen loops, bad luck)it isnt tied together unless im on the boat then it is tied wit a double figure * knot. really easy to tie and strong. i use leather boot lace. its pretty cheap

Hi there Mac,
Welcome to the forum. May you contribute and derive richly to and from this forum.

I have a Stainless Steel Copilot in plain edge. I use a red colored nylon cord and a hangman's knot on this cord.

I just put the lanyard there for aesthetics. Not really utility value since i carry the copilot in a plastic bag in the front left trouser pocket. Packing and unpacking it is quite a ritual though...

I dont use a lanyard on the Ladybug.

Have a nice day,
Kaizer.

Thanks all for your posts. After looking at several pics of knives w/ lanyards, I decided to add them to my pocket carrys. Pics forthcoming in another post.

One caveat, I'm into knotwork, so I experimented with interesting and more decorative knots. It took a while to get things right (a couple of days). I royally ticked my wife off spending so much time messing with the lanyards.

To my leatherman micra I added a sawtooth plait about 2 inches long and capped it with a doubled chinese button knot. Total length, about 2.5 inches. This put a large bulb on the lanyard (or fob if you wish) for ease of retrieval. I have found that this makes opening the scissors much easier.

On my SS PE Dragonfly, I put 3 knife lanyard knots (appropriate, I thought) and then capped it with a wall and crown knot. The first knot I put very close to the lanyard hole, so it wouldn't slide over the knife's tip and prevent me from opening it. Total length: about 4 inches. I did keep the clip on it, because I have trouble opening it and don't think I could open the knife without the clip for leverage.

These lanyards provide a nice grip, and I think they look cool. Oh, and they're made of 2mm paracord.

I took a look at the "Chris Reeve" knot. It's nice that he posts a diagram on his website. The reeve knot is a standard hangman's noose, also commonly used when wrapping coiled rope. It's advantage over my lanyards is that it can be undone easily for conversion to a loop lanyard.

I didn't put lanyards on my waistband carrys, I think it might make them too visible or get in the way of pulling them.
