What is the heaviest current production folder?

#1

Post by Jeremy_A_Neel »

I've been carrying a saber ground endura 4, and while I like the blade length, I kinda want something a bit more substantial, weight-wise. Aside from long since discontinued models, does anyone know what spyderco folders weigh over 5 oz?

If you want substantial, get the Tuff! Also the LionSpy, Manix 2 XL, and Gayle Bradley are all (I believe) over 5 oz.

someone once told me that the weight of the knife determined the quality  they didnt know much about knives lol

i think the manix would be a good lower-cost option

I like a good weighty knife too. To me my original run GB at 5.5oz is a decent weight. But there are some nice heavier option too...just not enough IMO. :D

Yeah my comment about Boris was sort of tongue in cheek b/c later in the movie the S&W 686 he was describing wouldn't fire. I prefer a lighter knife to keep overall weight down b/c of the other crap I carry in my pockets but I know some folks like a heavier one. In many cases heavier does mean stronger.

The Chinook was a tank of a folder

Post by JD Spydo »

The second and third Chinook models were the heaviest Spyders I ever recall owning.

Going back a few years there was a stainless handled version of the Rescue model which was built like an army tank. It was a very heavy and extremely solid built Spyder. That's one I would like to see return for work reasons and not necessarily collector/nostalgia reasons.

The C-44 Dyad was sure bulky as well>> Also I do remember the Titanium C-46 Lum Tanto folder was solid as a brick.

Don't forget about the Sage 4. It is *only* 4.2 oz, but in a much smaller package - it is a very dense, stout knife.

The Resilience comes to mind. It's heavy (5.4 oz) and it's also quite large, though inexpensive. Might let you try a heavier knife without spending a lot. If you like it, you could always have someone make a brass backspacer for it and really add some weight.

Look at the PPT, it's not the heaviest(5.3oz) or largest, but very well designed and built. Very versatile and useful :D
